Reviews for "A Corny Platformer"

Nice game. The controls were smooth unlike a lot of other stuttering simple games like this, and the graphics, though simple, fit the game quite well. The chat between the smiley and the flag was entertaining and the final stage wasn't incredibly easy. Though the game as a whole was generally easy, the variety involved in the gameplay did make it necessary to replay the game a few times through to beat it without dying. The music did get repetitive, however, as it was the same throughout the entire game. Different music for the "credits" might have fit, but it wasn't too bad as it wasn't a long game to begin with. Overall, the controls were smooth, the graphics fit the gameplay, and the music was adequate. Good game, it was exactly what I expected from the title. :)

StencylTuo responds:

I hope you found the M key to mute the music. Sorry that it got a bit repetitive. I figured it might, but I didn't want to spend hours trying to find the best one. I'm glad you enjoyed the dialogue :). I guess the game was a bit easier than intended. I had it harder to begin with, but I'm known for hard games, so I scaled it back (the underground level where you have to go up, for example, had about twice the enemies).

I'm glad you liked it :). I try to name the titles appropriately.

The controls are built well enough, even though they feel slightly clunky. The game itself was a bit short, but that's not really a huge problem. Music didn't really bug me much but wasn't too interesting. The sprites could use a bit more work and detail, but I'm sure you're working within your capabilities. My biggest gripe with the game is without a doubt the dialogue, which feels forced, wooden, and repetitive, and the game probably could do without it.

Still, I enjoyed it, 3 stars.

StencylTuo responds:

Could you explain how the controls felt clunky? I'm still trying to make improvements to the game. The game itself is actually a demo for others to learn from (the code will be open to the public soon), which is the reason for the graphics, etc.

As for the dialogue, I'll admit, it was a bit forced. I was trying to keep it short enough so that players wouldn't just skip right through it. In the end, I did compromise a bit too much :(.

The game itself wasn't really hard, it's difficulty comes from achievements like beating the game without dying, but that's a tad artificial. Anyway, the game was entertaining for a while. Maybe work on the music (it gets annoying) and on the dialogue. If you want an interesting story, try to make something more original. It gets a 3/5

StencylTuo responds:

I guess it depends on who you are. I've had comments on both sides of the difficulty debate. It was a bit hard to find a good track for the game that had the corny feeling. I'm a bit confused about the dialogue comment though; while I don't play a ton of games, I'm not aware of any games that have a similar story; I thought it was one of my better ones...

good game. ok. but it was easy.

StencylTuo responds:

I am guessing you are a good platformer then. Not many have found my games to be easy. I'm known more for rage quits instead :P. If it was easy to you, then hats off to being a good player :).

EDIT: Just checked out your badges. The difficulty does ramp up over time. Looks like you just played the first 3 levels.

game was alright. The music... was ok. Wasn't so crazy about the conversation between smily and the flag. personally i would have liked it if the dialogue stopped after the tutorial.

StencylTuo responds:

Aye, the dialogue isn't for everyone. I do have ESC to skip it if desired. Thanks for the high rating though!
