Reviews for "A Dream From the Past"

i love it!

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

Thanks! It's always interesting to see that people somehow manage to find a bit older tracks as well :)

It's instruments like these that don't get used enough, at least from what I hear. Happy New Years btw! And I'll say not a bad piece. I really enjoy the harpsichord work in this, and I won't mention anything about the strings stuff, but they don't sound out of place.

Not looking to make in depth reviews at this point. I'm on a whole post-graduation-recovery state and I'm finally looking at Newgrounds again. But again.

Happy New Year!
-Spadezer-

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

I like harpsichords, in general. As long as they are not used too much, that is...
I really wished I had better vsti:s though, especially for the strings :/ Either way, the production of this track was pretty lazy :p

Don't worry! Any reviews are welcome, and I like your ones well enough, as I'm sure all other receivers do too :3

Happy New Year to you as well! :'D

Hmm...the moods are what really make this piece interesting IMO. Interesting instruments, too. Starts off kind of sad and longing, then gets more hopeful yet also long-suffering, like - GASP - a soldier returning from war! :O I thought you overdid the reverb a bit, to be honest, because it almost feels a little too busy with the frantic synths in the background at places like :16. Interesting progression...almost feels like (dare I say it?) it'd be good for a montage of some sort. Perhaps it's a recovering alcoholic reflecting on his darkest days. Anyway, solid work! Looking forward to 2015, and I hope you are too. ;)

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

Interesting comparisons there!
I did overdo the reverb. Weird thing is, when I tried taking some away, this piece sounded worse in my humble opinion. If I would've done all the mixing anew, I'm sure I could've found a solution, but... Laziness :p
Those are actually not synths; just poor samples of strings XD
Hmm, I wonder what kind of montage this would fit in, as it sounds so harsh, somehow. If it'd be the memory of an alcoholic I'd figure it to be a more distant piece, while still having a lot of "darkness" in it.

AAANYWAY. Thanks for the last review of 2014 ;)
I'm definitely looking forward to this year :'D

Hey, cool! Really nice medieval-style ambience here. I really wish I could pull that off with my music. :D

Hm... I've noticed that a thing you do a lot is transitioning quickly to different note speeds. For example, at 0:15, you jump from eighth notes to sixteenth notes in 6/8 (I think - my music theory is far inferior to yours). Do you think there's a way of making that transition better? Right now, transitions like those feel a bit jarring to me.

That's about all the light criticism I can make about your composition. Everything else is great! The multi-tonality of the harpsichord makes ascending and descending notes like 0:58 sound so awesome. I can't imagine what you could do if you got your hands on some good samples. :)

Happy new year! May 2015 be even more productive for you than this one.

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

You wish you could pull that off? Well you could; easily. Just use a harpsichord, and place some notes ;)
You've already created a lot of great stuff, so the composing shouldn't be that difficult XD

I actually intended to make that transition pretty rough at 0:15, but maybe it didn't work as well as I wanted it to :p You could make it more smooth if you wanted to. And I am pretty darn sure that I have no music theory knowledge at all compared to you, and all the other musicians on this site :)

I'm glad you liked the rest! I'm not sure if you remember, but I actually sent you a version of this piece with only the harpsichord like half a year ago :'D

"The multi-tonality of the harpsichord makes ascending and descending notes like 0:58 sound so awesome"

=> I like that part too!! It's kinda unrealistic, but I dig the sound nonetheless :)

Oh I'd like to see what all musicians here could do with awesome samples :3

I hope you have a great 2015 as well >:D!!!

i really like this song i feel like if i was in a castle but not a ordinary castle there is something special in that castle

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

Thanks! Yeah, I wanted it to feel like you'd be in a castle setting. I used too much reverb for sure, but I think the idea was nice. Maybe I should use this in a small game some time :3
