For the record, it might not actually be on dec 21st 2012 EXACTLY. This is actually part of a larger window called "The End of Time", by the Mayans. The end of time spans from 2007 to 2015, so theoretically it could be sometime between now and 2015. My understanding is that it will happen when we are ready.
Also, the Hopi tribes (mayan descendants) have placed a specific date on feb 26th, 2013, so that's another thing to consider
