Reviews for "Richard Gatling"

Well done!

I try hard every day to not learn a thing... today I broke that vow. Hope you get an A.

Hooray education!

Hey, taught me a lot of things I never knew! That's always a good thing, right? Anyways, this was a great refresher for the usual pace of other flashes. You definitely can't say you didn't enjoy an animation you got something out of. Good job!

you know your history mate.

that said, i'd like to tell you a little about the "true machine gun" in which the recoil or gas from fired cartridges is used to drive the mechanisms to eject, cock, and feed the gun.

funny you should mention that during the 1890's Gatling went bankrupt. it was due to Hiram Maxim, inventor of the recoil-operated Maxim machine gun (the first true MG) taking over what Gatling formerly enjoyed.

in this weapon the round's rearward-directed energy from firing - recoil - was used to operated the block which ejected the spent case (this gun used brass cartridges and later, cordite propellants- another advantage over early Gatling guns), re-engaged the trigger lock, flew back and stripped a fresh round off into the breech. this cycle repeated at 400 times a minute until something gave - ammo, gunner, barrel warpage, etc. Also prominent was the use of a water jacket which so characterized WW1 weapons, not including French Hotchkiss aircooled guns and the like.

did you know, there were 2 versions of the crank-operated gun (gatling, williams)? The gatling fired off 0.60-caliber rounds from 6 or so barrels rotating around, while the williams gun used 40mm (2 pounder) rounds. both used black powder, and fed from above via a chute that was manually fed with paper cartridges as the crank was spun around. both, therefore, were manually-operated cranked guns... not exactly a machine gun, if you consider the technicalities.

whereas the maxim gun operated with the classic 7.92mm and 0.303 cal rounds, the gun proved to be a better seller in Europe compared to the Gatling- hence gatling's bankruptcy.

all in all, this flash should be highly informative! i see you didn't overlook humor in this one either. good work.

A++
