Reviews for "Rune Hunt"

I love this!!!!!!

Everything in this game is awesome it keeps you in mystery and yet tells enough of the mystery to give you an excitement of wanting more, you keep the players in a tantalizing hypnosis with the mix of pixel graphics, lightning, new additionsof the puzzle, and the interesting different ways you use lighting effects.I JUST LOVE THIS GAME PLEASE CONTINUE WITH A SEQUEL OR SOMETHING --------ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

just one word: NICE!

4/5 and 9/10
i think the same like the other ppl already post.
good work. pls keep ongoing or get my Pain xD

Great

Everything about this is pretty top-notch. The line of sight/lighting effects are top-notch, the 8-bit style is great, and despite the pixelation, the lighting and glow effects are executed stunningly. I also like how the game automatically pauses when the browser isn't focused on the Flash; very nice. There's a really fun puzzle-like quality to it, and the suspense is well done, as well as keeping the player intrigued. The music is quiet and atmospheric, fitting the gameplay perfectly. There are a few quirks however; for one, the dialogue gets pretty cheesy at points, and also the gameplay is a little tough; I don't mind difficulty, but if I want to see where the story goes it gets very tedious, especially if the portal sets me back far. I also noticed sometimes the butterflies would go past me even when I shooed them the other way, and sometimes the enemies would follow me into the light. On top of that, I was annoyed when my lanterns went out while I was reading dialogue, and sometimes I snagged on a wall and could only go in the opposite direction of that wall. I bet you could get completely stuck in a corner too. One last thing that kind of ticked me off is you never get an explanation for anything. What the hell?! Why did I even play this?

I really liked it but the end pegged it down a point.

Technically brilliant, but too hard

I really wanted to give this game a ten. But then I really wanted to finish it without using the walkthrough too.

Have to say though, it's a great walkthrough- with this game a description of what to do would have been pointless.

But the game is too hard, that's why it loses a point.

But, enough criticism, let me tell you why it got the other nine points....

The first thing that hits you is how atmospheric the game is. It's really quite an achievement to have that kind of moodiness with pixel art. The music helps- it's perfect. It just sits there in the background building suspense. A slight variation between levels would have been nice, but nonetheless it works and doesn't irritate.

The biggest and most obvious USP of the game is the lighting. At first it just creates a great atmosphere but then you realise the creatures kill in the dark and it's a key part of survival you really come to appreciate how well it works.
Genius.

I like a story in a game and so really enjoyed Rune Hunts exposition. When my dad died I actually felt sad. Pretty impressive especially so early in the game.

Please make a sequel. But make it easier. Herding the butterflies around was clever but then got annoying. Maybe if the player could light torches so that each tricky bit only has to be negotiated once, or give him a hammer and nails so he can nail the butterflies to the wall!

Well done.

Good idea about giving the player the ability to make a place secure by lighting up torches! Like this alot.

Good game

I have to be honest here, I didn't play this game for too long. But don't get me wrong, it's not because I think it's a bad game. I just don't have the time to play it all the way through. I still think I played it long enough to give you a short review.

Graphics:
I'm a huge fan of retro games (especially retro RPGs) so I really like those 8bit-like graphics. I also like the colours you chose, they fit very well together and you also managed to create a very dense feeling in the caves.
I also liked the "line of sight" effect. This amplifies the atmosphere you managed to create with the colouring. Parts hidden behind a wall stay hidden until I walk around this wall. This keeps the tension on a very high level.

Controls:
Nice and easy, but I had some issues with the controls while playing. Maybe it's because I'm on Ubuntu right now, but anyway: When I continued walking in one direction for some time, the character seemed to be "stuck" and moved very slowly, twitching around like mad. This even happened when I sure didn't hit any obstacles and in all directions I walked.
Sometimes it happened on the very first step, sometimes I was able to walk for quite some time until this bug happened to me. And this bug is the second reason I didn't play this game for too long.
But apart from that the controls seem to work fine.

Music:
Well, I didn't manage to get out of the cave yet, but the music I could hear there was pretty good and fitted nicely to the whole "dungeon theme".

Overall:
I think this game has potential. I like Coop's suggestion to try and add medals to it. This would give the game much more exposure and I think this game deserves to get it.
