Fun, but not excellent

As with "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World", this game finds itself lacking in certain elements that would take it past the stage of "fun" and into overall excellence, leaving it more mediocre than one might believe it to be at first. Superb for time-killing, I find that this game is lacking in anything overly stimulating to the brain - no need for super fast reflexes on the keys or to keep an eye out, and there's no real way to avoid obstacles on the ground (the spears), which makes the penalties of being stabbed come across as unfair. While some aspects, such as the drawings/graphics, are amusing and skillful at the same time, the basic layout of the game is rudimentary and leaves something to be desired in the "new" category. For example, seeing as how it is modeled off of previous games made, when voting on this piece one might be more inclined to reach for the "Nothing too new or interesting" ranking because of the lack of originality in the overall design.

The simplicity of the design makes it easy enough to use, though it might be intelligent to offer a set of completely-keyboard-controlled choices so that those who prefer the keyboard to using the mouse have an alternative. And you might want to consider making it so the mouse can control the glider as well as the "up" and "down" arrows on the keyboard, likewise, to make the controls used more comfortable to the individual players.

I found the plot-line to be cliche (not that there's a whole lot of plot, just enough back-story to explain why we're catapulting people as far as we can), and while I found the illustrations amusing, I also found the human vs. humanoid enemies to be rather trite. In my mind, the true mark of an artist is when irony or symbolism show through, even if whatever they're making is only meant to be something simple and fun that most ages can enjoy.

As some have previously suggested, I might reccomend adding a form of "pocket-god" type qualities to this game to make it more entertaining and more active for those of us in the audience who have ADD or just need something more engaging to be entertained. I might also suggest adding in an armor option - something to help the peasant/king/whatever to bounce higher/farther and/or to protect the catapultee from the spears that could very well end up buried in their belly.

I will commend you on allowing the person playing the game the option of picking who they're sending, and it's amusing watching the different reactions the person has on their journey, but I might also suggest adding in a background-change option, or a personalization option for the catapultee if you want to go really in-depth with your game. Adding in consequences for every failed attempt might also be a good idea, or having a set number of villagers/kings/etc that could be sent might also make this a bit more challenging.

Rather than the glider, I might suggest borrowing Tolkein's Eagles for extra flight time, or something of that sort - something as an upgrade, that won't be destroyed by one obstacle hitting it. I might also suggest raising the distance the messenger must be sent, or at least making it so that those playing may continue past the 50,000 point and keep playing, earning gold, upgrading, etc.

Again, I did find the game to be a bit redundant, and after a while of playing it I found it gets a bit boring (I played for around an hour, and was dying of boredom by the end, I'm just too competitive to give up before winning). To my mind, I might find something along the lines of Doodle God to be more entertaining simply because of the mental stimulation offered.

Another idea you might take into account is gearing this game toward an educational group - inserting math questions or ELA questions, things like that to give your characters an added boost. I know when I was growing up, I learned a lot of information from playing educational computer games, and I always found them to be stimulating. Perhaps more intellectual than you'd like, but an idea none-the-less.

Overall I'm going to give this a 7/10, 3.5/5.

Well done.
