you've got potential
here are some protips some of my favorite authors:
from Jay Naylor: map out your plot from begining to end especially when planning a long series. this is before you write your story, it allows you to keep the story coherent and flowing and allows you to properly forshadow (this is what makes epic multivolume novels so re-readable, the next time through small details you didn't notice so much the first time carry a weight and significance, and gives the story that finess/judo stuff since something small and belivable early on can have a better effect)
from Piers Anthony: write a character sheet for each character, what is their personality, what do they look like, what are their motivations, this allows your characters to be consistant, keep it updated, if the character is dynamic (they are influenced by some event, get mutilated, etc.) make a timeline for them noting when the event occured and have a sort of snapshot of what all was going on in the world when it happened (especially important when your story has multiple concurrent storylines)
that pizza roll dude from youtube: his name eludes me at the moment but he does awesome reviews of sci-fi flicks, he's famous for his Star Wars reviews, and they really are must watch because he shows how important plot and other factors are and it ties in similar advice to the two authors i mentioned and really drives home the importance of it all with examples.
i hope this helps, and i hope to see some great stuff from you as you learn the ropes.
good luck
