well i sure must say, this update has made all the difference to me... i still dislike the look of the catapult in the beginning though... but enough about that...
if u keep working on it this way, you will have a great game soon enough :)
next up must be the powerups eh?
mushrooms turns mario bigger, bigger area when landing, making it easier to hit things on the ground (including spikes :P),
flame flower (or whatever its called) gives mario 1 or 3 "explosive" bounces, that ignites when he hits the ground after picking up one of the flowers...
star increased flying speed, and invulnerability from spikes for a short period of time..
well mehh i dunno... just a bit thoughts about it, in any case, good luck with the game.

It's decent
You did a good job with a base model for the game. Next thing you should work on is sound effects such as the catapult, maybe mario grunting when he hits the ground. After that, you can work on setting up possible upgrades and goals that the player should work on. After that, start working on various backgrounds and use other sprites that would work with the spikes or when he hits fire.
