Reviews for "Dragon Boy"

Pretty fun, gets repetitive.

This game has all of the elements of Diablo, just simplified. Its right amount of depth for a flash game on Newgrounds, allowing some thinking and tactics, but still a hearty dose of clickclickclickclickclick. Hard mode is a good idea, but gets tedious after awhile.

Bugs:
-The chick's regen spell continues after her death.
-The dragon at top level doesn't show it if he dies, just keeps flying in place.
-Gold and exp reset when you load your game.
-Can't feed the dragon Giant's Foot?
-Store respawns each time you click Buy, instead of each time you enter town.
-Mute does not work, can still hear chips and squeaks.
-Weapon in left hand determines attack speed, no matter what's in the right one.

A hotkey bar would be great, because it's next to impossible to use food when you really need it. Also the AI is dreadful and could use alot of work. Enemies are bumbling idiots and your team is about the same. At times I wanted the option to fight without them entirely. It would be great if you had just a little more control over your party, i.e. NAME, fighting style, and spells/attacks.

Overall this was a very cool, very time-killing game. I look forward to a sequel!

Very Good

I would raise the same points as jjreinem, the game mechanics themselves are very good and the game is highly entertaining.

I did however spot another bug - you cannot use Giant's Foot on the dragon at all, not even just for healing - and my growth is not maxed out or anything - i can use any kind of food apart from giants foot.

(Although i dont really blame the dragon for not wanting to eat some random giants foot lol)

Clearly Diablo 2 fanwork

Not bashing it because its a fanpiece of diablo 2, It's just a blatant copycat. If it had some sort of reference to Diablo 2 other than the portals looking similar, sound effects pulled from the game, and terrain vaguely resembling the world of diablo, I probably wouldn't be so hard on this as it would be an homage to it. Instead we get a second rate version of a now bargain bin game that came out 10 years ago. It's ok, the controls are a little fussy, and the other characters are essentially useless until halfway through the first act. I'd also like to point out that the rain effects sound like someone trying to mow their lawn in the rain with cars driving by constantly. I don't know where you pulled that sound clip from but it sounds way too mechanical to be associated with swords and maces.

1 question.

How come your dragon is slow when you always feed Blaze?

Excellent mechanics, but several strange bugs.

As far as the mechanics go, I really have no complaints. I'll admit that I find it a little annoying to have to go back and grind to beat the next level once you get past the first camp, but after you start being able to buy gear it's really a rather quick and painless process. What bothered me is the fact that there seem to be an abundance of seemingly minor bugs that kept recurring as I went on in the game, which ultimately kept me from rating this higher.
First one is the most obvious: the sound. Generally I prefer to play games like this with the sound off, becaue frankly after a while the same repetitive smashing noises become extremely distracting. To put it simply: the mute option doesn't seem to work. Most of the sounds are gone, but there are a few sound effects that still inexplicably cut in periodically. The teleport, for example, almost always makes a noise, and the store seems to make one about 50% of the time. Occasionally the combat noises even bleed in. But the oddest thing about it is that the sound effect starts to play, and then is immediately cut off, suggesting to me that there are probably just a few lines of code in the wrong place that are muting the effect too late.
The other somewhat annoying thing is the pausing. Usually it works, but a few times I've been in heavy combat, gone into the inventory to eat something, and then a few seconds later died from an attack that shouldn't have happened. I can see movement around the edges of the inventory interface as well, showing that somehow it's not quite pausing everything that it's supposed to. Once again, I have to suspect that this is a case of a few misplaced lines of code firing off at the wrong time.
The other thing I've noticed are random slow-downs right after I've killed an enemy. My machine is a extremely high powered gaming rig, so I doubt that it's a case of the hardware not being able to handle it, and it makes me wonder if perchance this is another symptom of a memory management problem in the engine.
Once again, this game was rather well made, and deserving of praise. Admitedly there are some balance issues, and the equipment for each level seems somewhat overpriced given how marginal many of the upgrades are (and how small your inventory is) but since they aren't really necessary to win the game, it's really a matter of taste more than anything else. But the game as it is lacks a certain level of polish that could have perhaps been provided by more rigorous testing.
