Reviews for "90 Degrees"

Poor

The first problem I found was that it puts you straight into the game without a starting menu, the second was the glitch where the ball goes through the paddle sometimes and my final problem was that the paddles moved much slower than the ball in some cases

Mkay...

Some constructive critasizm here. I think it is a fine consept, yes pong games are done ALOT, however, there is a reason people still play them. Weather it is to feel nostalgic or to kill time, or whatever. Fine idea, but it does have its problems. Along wth those already mentioned I noticed that the paddles seemed to move often too slow to catch the ball. I didn't run into any problems when both paddles were in the corner. It did seem that sometimes the ball failed to follow the logical path one who has played pong before might expect when interacting witht he paddles (tighter angle the closer you are to either edge). THough reading over your responses to reviews I wonder if you didn't intend for the gameplay to be more than a stones throw from the expected. I do agree with eskens that as a brickbreaker style game it does perhaps have more potential. I also feel it would be better to start with a menu with instructions. And a place to set a goal score for a win (as there is not an aparent one within the game). I also agree that it would be nice to have a single player option, but depending on the ultimate platform if you use this as a framework for something else, that may not be needed. Also as I generally review with regards to music. If you add it add an off button. Music and sound don't have to be all or nothing situations, some people may like whatever is chosen, and others may prefer to go play their own music.

If this was posted as a framework I probably would have scored it better, but it already sounds like you have passed this project on as finished and would more likely apply suggestions to it's sequal. On that note I am giving you 3 stars because though a framework is here what I saw had very little playability. Cheers and hope I have more positive things to say about your next.

bad

not a very original concept, glitched when both paddles were in a corner, and the ball went too far over, it starts on its own, pong games have been done far too many times, and people should start making new ideas.

MajorBeetle responds:

I agree. Along with Pong-type games, I believe we have way too many sports games, racing games, first-person shooters, and JRPGs. I feel that puzzles and more Western RPGs will better capture the gaming community of tomorrow.

what the hell

is the point of this game? You can't just throw players into a game and leave them totally unoriented. they will click right off just as I did. I'd say zero stars but ng requires you to enter at least one.

MajorBeetle responds:

If your first reaction in a strange environment is to leave for fear of punishment or retribution, then I apologize. I invite you to come back and try playing around with the game, maybe inviting a friend to see how well you adapt to this new Pong environment. Thank you for responding.

Plain and simple, but needs help.

First off, it helps to tell people what it is (Pong, at 45 degrees, with 2 paddles each).

Second, don't just START the game.

Third, it's two-player, but you don't say so. How about a 1-player version? Shouldn't be too hard.

Fourth, show the instructions for the paddles, fine, but they get in the way when you just leave them there. Ditto the titles.

This is such obvious stuff, and this is Newgrounds, and my Aura is evil, so -- no stars. Sorry.

MajorBeetle responds:

Mostly, I got sick of going on Newgrounds and having huge load times (and viewing annoying ads) for games that were too complicated, or were laggy, or graphically confusing.
I believe that the player should be encouraged to find things out on their own, so, there are no menus, there are no loading screens, there are only helpful labels and the word I am looking for most in a game: "Welcome".
A game shouldn't be a strange environment, it should be natural, and it shouldn't punish you to explore, to figure out what 'this' does and what happens if 'that' occurs. You can start over at anytime.
I find your review most helpful, and I appreciate the time you took to fill this out. I am working on improving this, and I hope you take the time to evaluate that version as well. Thank you once again.
