Reviews for "Bango!"

Very good...

I really enjoyed this game.. I loved everything about it. Add medals pwease. 10/10 5/5

Good Stuff

The normal set of levels was definitely fun, and a few of the challenge ones were too. The "need a walkthrough" popup really shouldn't show up during the challenge levels (because they're more skill based), and it definitely shouldn't pop up more than once per level. Also, the achievements were pretty lame. I think by the time you're implementing achievements for dying multiple times, you've run out of ideas ;)

All in all, fun for a while.

Good game but

Fuck that "need a walkthrough??" pop up was annoying...at least make it show up in between rounds and not in the middle of one.

Interesting

My first review

You have a good and interesting game concept here, albeit not entirely original. The execution of the idea was almost perfect. A couple of things that you could work on. The music is irritating fast, but I won't comment too much on that.

1. The interface is fairly good in execution. There may not be a bug in the jumping, but there certainly is a problem with it the way it was created. Several times you seemingly land on the block and you don't, but the block falls away anyway. And several times pressing the jump key does not make you jump especially when running. This is apparent in your 'frustrating levels' section where blocks are almost a maximum distance apart and there is no room for error in jumping off the very edge of a block.

2. The automatic pop up for 'walkthroughs' is incredibly annoying and unnecessary. I know you're trying to help out gamers which are stuck, but for a game where you can easily make errors for short jumping or accidental mistakes, this gets incredibly annoying. And especially since you made the button to access the walkthrough the same as the restart button. I found myself pressing enter a couple of times and suddenly without knowing why, the walkthrough would come out. If I wanted a walkthrough, I would've looked for one. Not a good idea to paste it in the gamers face.

3. The difficulty slope is not balanced. Most of the time levels do not get increasingly harder or more challenging. You had some levels where you made gamers think about their steps before simply running it out and then some levels where solution is obvious but the jumps were harder (or further). I think you need to strike a balance between the two - difficult jumps and problem solving - and that will create a slightly more interesting difficulty curve.

And I'll end with a short comment on music (which I may use several times in the future). The common reply of 'just mute it if you don't like it' is the fall of many flash games. Music in a game is meant to enhance the gaming experience and by just saying 'you can mute it', you might as well have not included the music in the first place. A good choice of music can increase the sustaining power of the game. Imagine if you had a game that was incredibly hard. Most people would quit once they got stuck for too long. But if you add irritating music on top of that, most people would quit even faster. This comment is not aimed directly at this submission though. But you might want to think about that.

A relatively good submission into the game world. Keep it up and work on it and you'll have a winner.

Nice work!

I love to see authors responding to reviews, so I'm more than happy to write one here. It's easy to see the amount of work that went into this game- the graphics fit well, the mechanics are great, and the whole thing stays fun and fresh throughout. Getting all of the medals was a nice challenge- not so bad that it made me crazy, but hard enough so I felt accomplished to yell "I AM THE KING OF BANGO!". I do wonder if that was your real top score, though in the gold medal. I always say that when users can do better at a game than the creator, the creator has done a good job, so I give you a pat on the back for that.

Only thing that might be nice would be more unlockables. New challenge levels were definitely nice, but maybe a change in character color or music could also be unlocked with achievements. In particular, I would like to see the last achievement give a reward.

But overall, definitely nice work! Thanks!
