yeah, they turned it on and it reportedly produced (and this is the most unscientific, yet only account I have heard thus far) "subatomic fireballs that were over thirty trillion degrees". I'm eager to see what we'll find out once all of the data has been analyzed. (that'll be quite a while)
also, they did the math beforehand, if there were any microscopic/miniature black holes (which are still only hypothetical in existence) they would dissipate in fractions of a second (possibly merely a few planck seconds).
another thing that has happened is that they have successfully created and contained antimatter. we'd created it before, we just hadn't contained it. (and for those crazy apocolyptic theorists out there, the reaction between matter and antimatter would produce much less energy than "Angels and Demons" would lead your ill informed selves to believe)
