Taking an arrow to the knee was an actual battle strategy. So those guards who tell you that they used to adventure like you did but took an arrow to the knee during one of the wars or by a bandit and had to get a job because doctors of that relevant time period in actual history would charge for the removal of the arrow, the amount of bone shards and pieces removed from the wound and maybe even the dressing/cleaning and closing of the wound. The victim would not only have their passion stollen but all their money.
