Reviews for "GTFTN1 - Scanlines"

Short tutorial, but I got a benefit out of it.

Although you mention it in the comments and - for a couple of seconds - in the intro, I think you should list the required program(s) in the main menu, with the start button.

Even though I knew about defining patterns, I hadn't considered using them to do scanlines. Thanks for reminding me what a wonderful thing the pattern-defining function is.

The fades work well.

For the first screenshot, circling the important info would help. Maybe darken the irrelevant parts, with a mask letting us see the relevant parts at original brightness?

And more than one example of the technique's usage would be nice.

These might be more useful if you explained the techniques - here, for example, explaining how patterns work, so folk could try their own. Even an extra paragraph would have sufficed, pointing out that the defined pattern is tiled, maybe illustrated with a zoomed in example, with squares surrounding 'tiles'.

To stop music, use:
stopAllSounds();

Short tutorial, but I got a benefit out of it.

thanks for the code and the review, some good points.

I'm working on a part 2 which will be a longer and technically better tutorial

glad this helped you though

Decent.

Animation/Graphics - Very simple, but you did have some actual animation in your tutorial when the text was kind of typed out in the very beginning. There wasn't any more animation after that though. The colors were good not only because they went well together, but also because the combination of colors made it very easy to read the text. Other then that there isn't anything else to comment on.

Story - The information was very good, but I still probably couldn't and won't use it myself, so it wasn't personally helpful. I'm assuming for people who use photoshop received some good information and hopefully it helped them. The text was organized well and the size was great to read. The pictures in your examples were of good quality and helped people who needed to see it be done visually.

Audio - Well, I see in your author comments that you were having trouble with the audio. I can't help you personally with that, but I'm sure if you have any flash questions then they would be able to answer it in the flash portal. This may be an audio problem, but I think it's more of a flash related problem. Things that could of been done if you weren't having problems could of been stuff like a simple background song, or maybe a selection of songs to use. You could go into even more detail like adding sound effects to when you click on the next or back button. I think that it would of been pretty cool if there was a typing sound effect, like a typewriter in the beginning when the text appeared across the screen.

Overall - A good tutorial, which I wouldn't be able to use myself, but hopefully others can. I hope you fix your audio problems and good luck on any future submissions.

thanks for the review, I think i know how to handle the music now too

Good detail

A simple and effective little tutorial, which could ahve used a background tune - something ambient, just to take away from the glut of emptiness that's just begging to be filled with some sound of some description.

The detail seems simple enough that most people can deal with it - there aren't too many steps, where the user can easily get lost in and it looks like users will be able to make scan lines quite easily once they've used this tutorial.

Quite a good tutorial!

Well done on making a very useful tutorial :D

I like the design of the buttons, but the background itself was very dull, so try and make a more professional and sophisticated background to your next tutorial.

You could also add a design to the cursor, as it would look a lot better than using the everyday boring PC cursor.

I recommend adding music to this tutorial, and if you were to add music, don't forget to place a mute button on each page as well.

At the moment, the user cannot go back a step. Next time, add a 'previous' button.

If you are considering making a more complex tutorial, use videos to guide the user through each step, rather than just pictures and text.
