Reviews for "Preloader Tutorial - 1"

thanks but....

Well it didn't work for me. I'm giving you a nine though because it was very well explained and all.
But it didn't work. Maybe you could help?
So I'm using flash MX, could it be different since its oldder?
Well anyway, when I test it, the bar doesn't get bigger, it just starts off at 100% and then goes to frame 2 to play the music.
Do you know what could be wrong? thanks!

TheVisibleMan responds:

If you tried the testing from the tutorial and it didn't work, I can offer a few (random) guesses as to possible problems. Your flash version shouldn't make a difference unless it's really, really old.

First, when testing the movie, check that the download speed is reasonable before selecting Simulate Download. It's possible you left it set to some huge number, causing it to download instantly in the simulator.

It's also possible part of the ActionScript was lost when you copied it over.

Try downloading the .fla from the troubleshooting section at the end of "Finishing Touches" and tell me if that one works. If it does, there must be something missing in your version.

Contact me through PM and I'll try to help you sort it out.

Very helpful

This tutorial was very helpful, you toke it step by step explain every lil detail and making sure the viewer didnt do it wrong. The grahics and interface were great also. Awesome job!

TheVisibleMan responds:

Thanks! Hopefully the next part will turn out just as well :)

Helpful, I think.

I think this will be helpful for anyone who creates flash movies. :)

TheVisibleMan responds:

That was the plan :)

NONONONO!

RAWR!! CODE ON MOVIE CLIPS!!! ACH!!!
Sorry, it really annoys me.
It's bad practice to code on the movie clip. Much MUCH better to code on the frame.
Well at least you understood the theory behind it, and explained the code. I'll give that to you.

TheVisibleMan responds:

Well, so long as I'm using AS2.0, I might as well take advantage of that "feature". It did allow for a nice, simple setup.

When I do reusable preloaders, the ActionScript will be moved inside the MovieClip, so I guess it will technically be on a frame :P

Thanks for the animated review!

High quality tutorial

Wow, a tutorial that doesn't suck, that's rare! It's not perfect, but it explains the actionscript. Next, teach actionscript 3 and how to avoid improperly structured movies that doesn't preload properly.

TheVisibleMan responds:

Thanks!

Unfortunately, I'm still only learning AS3, so I doubt I'm qualified to write a tutorial on it. As to the structuring of movies to ensure they load properly, are you referring to Linkage's "Export on First Frame" option? I was actually planning on covering how to work around that. If you know any other pitfalls I should warn people about, please PM with them :)
