Reviews for "Animation Challenge Wk1-3"

Nioce

My advice of submitting only every 3 weeks was used! I feel special!
Although it rpobably would have ended up being like that anyways to give people time to send in their .FLAs. Haha.

My votes would count towards nothing, so I'm not going to bother.
It was cool to see what people come up with in a week.
Some obviously spent a good portion of time, others were more like an hour, but that's okay.

My only two complaints are
1) Do something about that disgusting pixalized Tom Fulp. For some reason it just doens't fit the movie at all. Maybe if there was something a little better to put in the corner there.
Maybe a picture of yourself? Since you have more to do with this.

2) Don't accept submissions that people made prior to this contest. The whole point is for people to have a week to make a creative flash. If they take old work, they could have taken all the time they wanted, and wouldn't even have to try.

Rudy responds:

Yeah, you're right about the whole timeframe bit and the Tom Fulp ehhh. Oh well.

Thanks though.

only complaint

that was pretty tight, I just have ONE complaint and only poining at a couple of the authors....you do realize normal walking/running arms swing with the opposite leg? as in R arm and L Leg forward while L arm and R Leg are back, not R arm and R leg, L arm and Leg.....otherwise, there were some good animations in there :)

Rudy responds:

Yeah, I've realized the complex of a walking cycle long ago, I don't quite know about others but yeah.

Thank you though.

Back to stickman board

In all fairness I didnt like it. The artwork wasn't that great and it was extremely boring. It would been better if everything wasnt on a loop

Rudy responds:

Well, it isn't an "animation movie" contest, it's a "animation loop" contest. The people are given a theme to animate and they will have to set their standards on completing the task.

The point is to showcase the work for the viewers to vote on the best submission.

well

I vote for:
Week 1: Burning Bunnies
Week 2: Chal
Week 3: ChillyPhilly

but the vote already over.. XD
I hope I can vote next time :)

Rudy responds:

Hopefully! It'll be released probably April 12th, or so. :)

Good, but good enough

Being honest here, its hard to review being a collab piece. The idea itself is great an interesting, and I'll definately be checking out the website.

Not, for the animation. Alot of the walk cycles were poor. Rudy was the only good one there which seemed like a typical walk cycle that could have been taken from an animation book, it was good. the others, proportion, timing, spacing, didnt work. Some built nice characters, but walked poorly. And it didnt help with the background moving faster than the speed of the walk. I thin vincoid did a fat walk which had nice secondary animation with the flab...shame the actual walk was seemingly rotoscoped.

The jump cycles were much better. Chillyphilly in particular was great. Some lacked idea, or went for something that would look cool and then actually forgot to animate it. The warrior dude inparticular. Nice idea, but too ambitious, because it was hardly animated.

ChillyPhilly again excelled in the explosions, beautiful stuff, and apart from that, the rest we not very memorable.

So overall, some guys are good, alot do not show enough work. For a weekly project, producing walk cycles of that quality is not good enough, and was something that could have been done in a day easily. A week on a walk cycle, you better be adding some character, conveying emotion, and have a detailed character aswell. One week! A walk cycle is like 15 drawings, 30 maximum. Jumps are harder to get right, but at least some of them were good and showed some promise. The explosions, again, a week, and alot of them looked like they were done in a day.
Some people seemed to have viewed this perhaps as a way to get popular by jumping on the collab bandwagon because animation tests and collabs get votes. Unfortunately, alot of guys forgot the mechanics of animation, and to even add character or make the images believable.
The only explanation for taking a week to produce some of these tests is either they have never used flash before, or they simply dont care enough. And when people dont care, its insulting to the ones who do.

Rudy responds:

Yeah, I understand where you're coming from. I really appreciate your input and I'll take it into consideration on future weeklies.
