A very sudden difficulty rise.
The game itself was very good, offering a range of weapons with visible upgrades. But I noticed as soon as planes are introduced the game's difficulty rockets into the sun, turning moderately slow death of enemies into impossibly massive in strength aerocraft. Make that level less impossible, and you could get 9 stars.
