Reviews for "Dead Frontier: Night One"

It's ok

The overhead style view reminded me of the older GTA games, which I thought was a refreshing aspect of the game. It's a pretty nice diversion, though it gets old quickly, but I do look forward to the RPG. If it has the same kind of graphics as this I think it'll be really decent.

Decent, but could be better

I liked the premise of this game, and it is clear that you worked very hard on it. I enjoyed it as well. However, I noticed a few glaring problems/errors.

The icon for the Steyr TMP is incorrect. The picture shows an MP5, not a TMP. You got the icons for the other weapons correct, nonetheless. In addition, as many other people have stated, the reload times are unreasonably long. Only for the Mossberg 500 would such a time be acceptable, as one must insert each shell. For the Glock 19c and the Steyr TMP, there is really no way a trained professional, or anyone who has ever seen a gun before, for the matter, could take that long to reload. I understand that you wanted to add some tension and difficulty to the game, but there are other ways to do so (e.g. give the player a very limited amount of magazines, forcing him to make each shot count.) You could also have the player be forced to refill a set number of mags with rounds from a general ammo pile (e.g. you get 5 20-round pistol mags, and you can buy ammo in reserve, but you have to drag-and-drop the mag icons unto the ammo pile for them to be filled by a helper when they are empty). Of course, this is purely a suggestion, and I am sure you can think of something better.

The character's movement speed is also a bit too slow. If there was some sort of explanation for this (that he is wounded or injured, etc.) then I am sure that it would be better accepted. Finally, some melee weapons would be a nice addition for the times when you are caught with all your mags dry. It doesn't have to be anything elaborate; just a combat knife, blunt object, or any other implement that does not push one's sense of disbelief too far would be good... unless you decide to include some easter eggs, which would be quite nice.

Overall, I think that you did an excellent job on this, and I hope that you'll take some of these things into account in the sequel. I am looking forward to playing it.

Nice graphics and concept...

...but needs to be better executed. All the graphics and sound was excellent. However the game felt extremely arcady and generic. Try and make your game more set apart from other by adding stuff like barricades and a bigger area to fight in. Right now its just a bad version of boxhead: the rooms but with nicer graphics.

Unbalanced, completely unfair.

Graphics are great, really impressive visuals and the blood stains staying on the floor are a nice touch. Sound is passable, not a whole lot there but there doesn't have to be too much.

But the difficulty caused by poor mechanics are what hurt this game. First of all, zombies can crawl faster than a human can walk? Are you fucking kidding? You may as well tell the player before th game starts he/she can't win and shouldn't bother playing. Because of the speed handicap, it's impossible to not be surrounded. And everyone knows zombies surrounding you = death.

The weapons do push them back which is good, but the reload times for all of them are about 2 seconds too long. How long does it take a highly trained military gunman to switch a clip? The shotgun I can understand takes a longer load time but what really makes it completely worthless is it takes about a second just to ready the next shell.

And lastly, why such a limited circle of visibility? Doesn't this guy have a flashlight? Some "special ops" team this was. Is it any wonder why they became zombie chow?

TIP: If you want to beat the game, stay in the living room for a LITTLE bit, and when you get the TMP, stay in the bathroom the rest of the game. Be careful when you leave to get the powerups outside the bathroom, as there is a glitch in the system that makes the game a bit easier. The Zombie AI can't get you unless you walk out of the bathroom, for all the zombie that come out of the front door on the right side of the house.
