Reviews for "Star Island"

So CUTE!!! ^_^

It's a rare thing to find a game that appeals to my inner child on Newgrounds. I'm rather pleased with this game. The graphics were adorable, the music fit the mood yet didn't become too annoying even after repeated plays, the levels were challenging, and the overall gameplay was incredibly intuitive.

I do have one beef with this game, though, and that's the physics.

There are times when the drag on the player caused by moving one way completely cancels out the movement in the other direction, causing the little star thing to just sit there trying to move. This became rather annoying in the second ice level, when I fell into the sliding penguin pit and couldn't get out of the penguin's way because I fell in a leftward direction and needed to move in a rightward one. It got really irritating, to say the least.
Also, on the topic of physics, I disliked the way that the bounce buttons needed you to jump at the right time to actually make it up to where you're trying to go. Sometimes I'd have to bounce 3 or 4 times to get the timing right, and it hurt my completion time.
another physics-related issue: the enemies. I liked the Mario-esque combat: jump on the enemy to kill it. But if you are directly above it and get the angle off just a LITTLE bit, you'll get hurt. I can't tell you how many times I have jumped on top of a crab in that one level only to lose a much-needed heart.
One more issue (this one's more related to level design). Certain gaps that are required to escape from certain areas (such as the ledges on the left side of the sliding penguin pit) are so narrow that unless you get them at just the right angle, you won't make it through. I was scrambling to get up on the ledge to get away from the penguins, and again and again I'd fall back down because I just couldn't quite fit. Widen some of the gaps and play through a few times to make sure they'll work more efficiently.

I took the points for these issues out of interactivity.
Other than all that, the game's great. I gave it a 4 out of 5. Fix those things and it'll be a 5 easily. Looking forward to the sequel, keep up the good work.

nice game

I never thought I would say this but it is kind of nice getting a break from all the zombie killing and intense gore of other games.
you did a nice job making this game and it came out great. the graphics are good and so is the music.

sorry

There is word going around that this game is alot like Loco Roco... which I'm kinda glad I haven't played because to be honest I just didn't enjoy this game. Not enough going on in it for me. The Graphics were nice, the Sound was good quality, though sometimes a bit repetitive, the controls were spot on. It's just that the simplistic gameplay, though it may be perfect for a certain group of people, is just not my cup of tea. Also I found the score tally screen between levels to be a bit long. I kinda wanted to just get on with it.

As for the reference to it being a straight rip-off of Super Mario... well that guy is just out of his mind, dumb, or intentionally trying to get a rise out of people. This game in no way resembled mario.

I'm sorry, I personally didn't enjoy it, but congrats on the frontpage and good luck on the sequel.

Good and solid programming, but unoriginal.

The platform engine that you programmed is great, and if you're planning on a second game, you shouldn't do too much to your physics and such.

This is obviously a knock off of Loco-Roco, as the art, gameplay mechanics, and style is identical. Maybe you should admit that?

Amazing game!

Wow this game is so fun! If Roco Loco and Sonic the Hedgehog had a baby, it would be this game. Again, really fun game!
