Reviews for "Hansel and Gretel"

VERY similar to the original, actually.

I like flipping through the reviews and seeing how many people are squicked out by this. I hope they realize that the Hansel & Gretel story they tell their children IS creepily similar to this...except the witch lost in the end. Mind you, if the witch DID actually catch onto Hansel's scheme, I wouldn't doubt that that WOULD be what she'd do to the children. The 'bzou' in "Grandmother" (aka, "Little Red Riding Hood") had the girl eat her grandmother and drink her blood, so why not? Story's moral remains the same: children shouldn't trust strangers (and even more so, how to be a BAD mother, though that is irrelevant to your flash).
Anyway, very nice, and I DID check out this Firth guy because there's such a huge hissy going on over him, and...um...I personally didn't see much similarities...maybe in the style of the flash, but not drawings in particular. I DO hope the low-life flamers attacking you realize that artists actually borrow ideas from each other and it's incredibly rare to find someone who has an ALL original style or way of doing something. Mozart and Haydn borrowed from each other all the time, and Beethoven learned from Mozart.

Aikefu responds:

Yes, the original stories of many of these fairy tales are often a lot more gruesome than the versions published in the 1930's Disney books/movies.

Also, thank you for having the common sense to judge a work based on its own merit and not giving it an arbitrary score based on somebody else's work. Some people here think it's a big scandal that I draw inspiration from Firth's style (even though he's never done the Hansel and Gretel story, and there's really no comparison to any of his other wonderful cartoons). Firth is just one of many of my influences. I also incorporate the styles of older artists like Salvador Dali and Antonin Artaud into my work, as well as newer artists like Jhonen Vasquez and Roman Dirge. Firth's style came through a lot more in this particular cartoon, but I'm definitely not trying to be a Firth-clone.

Don't get too down about being compared to Firth.

Anything with a dark twist always gets lumped under his banner for one reason or another. I've seen people accuse the "Children R Scary" series of the same thing and those have been extremely successful. I like the style you have implemented here and think that you have considerable skills. If anything I would suggest taking the comparison as a compliment and using it to fuel your motivation for these types of works.

That being said, I thought the flash was very well put together. The graphics were above-average, though a bit forced at points. I really like the way you got the voice over to sound...couldn't tell you exactly what it was, but it was absolutely perfect. The flash was a little short, but all things considered very very well done.

5/5
