Reviews for "The Ugly Duck"

wtf?!

Well if you where aiming for a shocking animation you shocked me. Is this some sort of supressed emotional outbrake? why the hell would you show a father manhanddling an infant? Not to mention the fact that the other guy seemed to have more problems then the father. I know whats its like to be hit by a father, and well this animation disgusted me. May it be art or your sick way of letting out your frustration you should not have made the top five with this, and the guys from The portal should be ashamed for picking such a disturbing animation.

nice

Very good. Liked this a lot.

For the love of god, explain this for us.

I'm pretty sure EVERYONE caught the child abuse resurfacing whatnot which results in some kind of psychotic break to kill the abusive father (figure)...

But the rest of the flash most likely has too convoluted of a meaning to you, as the artist, personally, and the conveyance of that meaning is lost outside of a narrative of some form.

First, why in god's name was the guy PUNCHING the baby? I can understand shaking it and getting a bit aggrevated, but unless you're suggesting that in the future (or present, as the case may be) that violent gamers who throw things in a fit will physically batter their children to death, this seems to be a bit out there.

Second, what precisely motivates this guy to then take the child? While this isn't specifically that hard to assume, it's chronological and merely open to interpretation, which voids the meaning of it if no one knows what it is supposed to mean.

Third, why is it that the first thing the man does following is head to the toilets with the seemingly appeased or otherwise simply not unhappy baby?

Fourth--and by far the most pertinent--why was the child put in the toilet, starting it crying once more, prompting the... protagonist to sit on the toilet and wimper/beg/wish/hope for the baby to be quiet?

I honestly hope that this was merely an artistic endevour and that you aren't a psyche major with a facination with independent films... because simply being ambiguous and full of allusions and metaphors doesn't make something good, aside from the pretentious world of artistic BS...

So if this was merely art . . . please esplain D:

I think many of us would like to know not only the meaning itself, but the origins and motivations for its creation and what meaning it should have to the viewers...

It is my personal feeling that, from reading many of the other reviews, too many people are simply taking in the "dark" nature of all things in it and are merely "disturbed" out of dissonance of a pure lack of anything else to think or feel... and unless that was the intent of the piece, it would be nice to alleviate such misconstrued feelings.

JeremyLokken responds:

He sits on the toilet, with the baby beneath him, as a duck would sit on its egg. He uses the toilet as his own nest. His egg is the already abused baby that he knows can have a better life than the one he grew up with (as seen in the flashback). I thought it was pretty clear, a very simple story without a happy ending.

Urm... Yeah...

What the hell was that? the overall mark I gave yyou was based on the animation and the execution of it all, but what the hell?

For one thing... What ugly duck? Is this a metaphor for the guy? I Think Yes.
For Two things... Oh actually I'm starting to think about it now... Ah yes I see what you've done here... oooooooooooooh! It all makes sence now... Exept one thing... Actually two things

1) Why did that baby never blink?
2) Why did 'The Ugly Duck' put the baby in the toilet and sit on him while crying?

And Now I'm going to explain the story for those who don't understand.

Guy gets beaten as child and never gets over it therefore the metaphoricalo 'ugly duck'
Ugly duck see's a guy in the park beating a baby so kills him and takes the baby so that the baby can become a swan
Then ugly duck takes Baby to the public toilets in park, puts him in a toilet and sits on the toilet sobbing into his hands. Possibly contemplating suicide or something.

Uhmmmm...

Well the animation was fucking awesome and the sounds are very well selected, but I'm not sure I actually understood all that was happening it's a little strange but really enjoyable though.
