Reviews for "Sg720 - Tonight"

Not bad at all

A little issue with the louder background notes having issues with reaching too high on the sounds they produce, so you get some sort of static-life feedback, you have still managed to produce a damned good song.

I think that on balance, there is a good beat and a decent melody, though the beat is what really keeps me here, so more work is needed on the melody - it sounds a little one dimensional to me and could use a little more of a shove into the dynamic, perhaps with more instruments that have power, as opposed to what sounds like a collection of backing instruments, which would be a shame.

The way the beat is so powerful at the start, I thought that it was going to be an industrial track. Perhaps in order to affirm the belonging on the trance scene, you need to give it more of a kick in the direction of tempo, upping that and giving the listener less time to think and be choosy, as the trance crowd is quite fickle.

Curses! Why did I chose the trance crowd?!
Bollocks.
BUt hey, so It doesn't seem like I can really do a whole lot on THIS song with your criticism, but I'll make sure to sprick and sprock my next song so it's a little more catchy, grippy, annihilate that whole thinking aspect of the song and make it just feeling!
Gosh that's gonna be hard. I think I just need to keep trying and we'll see if it's any better in the future!
Thanks for the review.
More push, more shove, more power, MOAR AWESMOE!
And my mastering, always my mastering! AAAH I MUST IMPROVE!

Right. THanks. :)

Wow...

Seriously... I couldn't spend even a second hearing the song without my mouth gaping wide open. You have talent, and a lot of it. One more song like this, and you'll have a spot on my favourite artists list for sure. Get ready for a review made up almost entirely out of praise...

The melodies are so awesome. Loved the melodies that were played by the instrument that first appeared at 0:37, and the background depth in this song is just extraordinary. I mean, there was so much happening at the same time, but you still managed to retain a fixed rythm that's easy to keep track of. I just loved the part at 0:57, and 2:04 was very nice, with a very, very, awesome melody coming up at 2:14. Just one problem: 0:29 had much too much distortion, IMO, and it sort of ruined the catchy melody that the instrument was playng at the time. I liked the reverb you put in the song; it gave this a nice spacey feel, as hinted in the other reviews....

The synths you used here are really great. Seriously, you used 16 synths in this, and it still didn't get random. I really don't know how you did it. Loved the synth at 0:37, it had a cool vibe to it, and all of the background synths were excellent. Synth at 2:14 was nice too. What amazed me quite a lot were the amazing sound effects you did in this. That effect at the beginning was just so cool and mighty; it gave me goosebumps O_o. Plus, there were loads of other sound effects like reverse cymbals and stuff which really kept me listening and interested till the very end.

The transitions are just so amazing. I liked the transitions similar to the one at 0:37, they were perfect to introduce that new insrument, and there were some sound effect transitions which were done really nicely. I couldn't find any rought transitions, and all the instruments were introduced either with a fade in, or with a smooth transition, so good job over there. There were also some really amazing buildups in this song, namely the long and gradual one at 2:04.

This song is so well structured. Probably the best structure I've seen in a huge while. The background constantly changed throughout the song, which made the song's variety excellent, especially since there are so many different synths and melodies, plus it didn't get random at all. Seriously, do you ever do anything wrong????? O_o.

When it comes to the intro, it was perfect. The effect was a fantastic way to start the song up. My only complaint is that the intro was rather abrupt, if you get what I mean. It sort of started a little too suddenly. I'd rather, before the intro starts up, you do a long (maybe around two seconds and a half) heavily reverbed and delayed reverse cymbal, and then the effect started up along with a reverbed kick. As the intro is now, it almost made me jump :P. As for the ending, I don't see why Haggard didn't like it. I rather liked it, since it wasn't too abrupt, and had a very nice effect. I just think that those seven notes you used with the instrument that had the cool vibe to it at around 2:51 could've been louder though, to give more significance to the ending.

The drums are interesting. They contrasted with all of the crazy and action-packed stuff that was going on in the foreground by using a laid-back, slow drum beat. The drum samples sounded really cool, and the beats were decently varied and well done. I totally agree with aliaspharow though, that at times, there was a kick only, when I think there could've been more, like maybe a kick-cymbal or some soft drum beat. Also, I think that the kick could be a little heavier and the drums in all could've been a little louder.

This is a really cool song, with superb melodies, an amazing variety of synths, plenty of alternate melodies, extremely good song structure, brilliant effects and great intro/ outro. Just work on starting the intro a little more smoothly, the loudness of the drums, and that distortion, but that's all nitpicking. You got me to favourite the song, which is a very rare occurence. Keep it up!

Huzzah! glad you like it. I agree with your nitpicks! I think this is a really good song too, but if I'm ever to get signed or sell my music or be any better I've gotta shape up all the little things!
I really appreciate the small stuff, I'm going to get to work on the intro and tighten up my outro as wel as the kick and mixing issues as MACH02 pointed out. And of course, I'll see if I can't add some surprises while I'm at it.

Maybe someday... I will rule the universe!

Well, this is muchly better...

...then the other song i reviewed, i took note of ur reply to it...

Anyway, i still see a few eq mishaps;
1 it distorts in the higher notes because of the loudness on a few of ur samples.
Tone down the volume on a few of your samples, like at 37 secs in and at 1:40
2 Your bass and kik get lost in the loudness of the higher freq. in a few places, as such its still rather top heavy in places
Anyway, this is still much better than "insane For Her" a 9 and a 5 from me, could still use a bit of tweaking in places tho...

_-Mach 2-_

sumguy720 responds:

Oh hey yeah! I gotta focus more on mastering my kicks. I'll see if I can tweak that, and maybe add a harder bassline.

I'm reaaaaally having trouble on the first thing you mentioned. I'm gonna fiddle with it and see if I can mix it a little better. Thanks for that feedback, Back to work!

Spacey

This song has a great and spacey atmosphere. It almost feels as if I'm sitting in some kind of spaceship flying through space. And sometimes the atmosphere is more like I'm sitting on the earth, watching the stars and wishing I would sit in a spaceship flying through space. XD

Anyway, I like the melodies in this song pretty much. They are catchy and even after listening to the song three times they still sound unique and fresh.
Also, the transitions between the slower and the faster parts is done pretty good. Those changes in speed also prevent the song from getting too repititve.

Only the outro isn't done that nicely. The song pretty much just ends there. I think a fade out while the main melody is playing would sound better. But on the other hand, fade outs are overdone, so it might be better to just leave the outro as it is now. ^^

sumguy720 responds:

Yeah, I am XOnstantly tipping between doing fade outs averagely and doing abrupt endings poorly.
Someday I'll get better at one or the other, and when I do I'll start concluding my songs with the utmost skill! Until then, I appreciate the feedback, I'll practice that from now on.

I hate to sound like a fan, but this song really does hit my top ten favorite songs on newgrounds. you really got the right reviewer because I LOVE spacey music. The major probleme with this song (well its not really a problem) is that it would probably attract higher scores if it was in the Drum and Bass section but, of course, you would have to reinvent the drums in this song wich could become complicated at a certain point.

The Melody: 10/10
the melody is really a great one. Nothing complicated, just basic works. it is all the little details that give it such a complex sound. Every synth can is noticed and each one of them sounds awesome in its own way. you have clearly mastered all forme of effects in this one, but the one that i appreciate the most is the reverb. it is at a level of perfection in this song. The speed of the song is also very ideal.

The Instruments: 9/10
The perfect choice of synths give it a mysty feel. But the song is extremely "bassy". This is not a bad thing, it mostly relates to the fact that i think this song would of gone better as a Drum and Bass. The rythme in this song is not compex enough though. This is barely noticable but I think that it could have used more then a simple "kick" maybe adding some more drums in more areas would of helped. but this does not change much so it is completely up to you.

NOTES: this song would be awesome for a music video! And i think it deserves to be in the top 5 of the week. I think you have the potential to be one of newgrounds best so you got my vote. And i'l try mentionning you on some sites or something. Youve got a real talent there! about time you make yourself known.

sumguy720 responds:

Thanks a lot for your vote of confidence! I have always had a hard time mastering my percussion. I really will work on that next time.
I'm glad you like all the stuff in here though. I put a lot of time into mixing and then balancing the soundspace between all the synths. I would have been happy to get top five, but I think I'll have to wait a week or two. Maybe in the mean time I'll see what I can do about improving those drum lines.

Also a pre-emptive thank you for mentioning me elsewhere, I need all the publicity I can get!

Anyway, thanks for the review. I'll see what I can do with this after I get all my work done that I've been putting off.
