Mad World was originally performed by a very successful Australian band known as "Tears for Fears". This version is quite like the original. I suspect you have been introduced to the song via the "Gary Jules" version for the Movie "Donnie Darko". Incedently, that movie also features a song by "Tears for Fears" a few minutes in from the start.
