Reviews for "-=LJC=- Amygdalic Atrophy"

nice sluggish, dubbish groove, where's my ket and the dancefloor?
you should check out splagawaga's new dubby stuff (wagawaga on myspace), is kewl, serious, like my squad, they don't ramp...
atrophy is wicked sounds blood

LJCoffee responds:

Thanks man - will def come and see what you and splag have each been doing lately. Loved the stuff that you and he did together a while back.

yello

liking this.
Nice moody slow build with the glitch elements adding to the overall suspense of the trk.
Definite soundtrack material.
I think you could've put some more double timed beats in there to help ot develop more, but I like the fact that it's dark and consistent.
Great production too.
Nice one:)

LJCoffee responds:

Hey hey KB,

Thanks mate, haven't seen you around in a while - always nice to hear from you.

More double time beats - an excellent suggestion. I'm thinking that if the piece were extended a bit, the percussion doubled in a few spots and halved in a few others then it would be much more engaging.

Always a stream of good advice coming from you. :)

Take it easy!

what else woudl i consider...

the main drum beat was very driving, glitch fills, always changing, the pad is nice and dark.

Once the pad fills out, the drums hold a pattern, but they are always vairatinr I think you added strings, but im not sure, sort of sruggling to type right now.

Its a little repetive, but the there is a lot of movement in the middle, nothing is the same, i like how the beat is always changing...

Nice effectis on the pad, with the attack, and the drums coming back in. oooh, that fade out is nice, but I want so much more.

Sorry for being greedy....

Are the vocals saying something at the very beginning or is it just me....

(video game all the way...)

maybe a newer golden eye(N64) feel, so says my roomate...

LJCoffee responds:

Hey RGH,

Haven't seen you around in a while. Thanks for the comments. The vocals really aren't saying much of anything - they started out as a sort of semi-melodic pseudo-phonemish wialing. They've been reversed, effected, in some cases reversed again and run through a huge amount of reverb so it really only just hints at something resembling speech at this point.

Thanks again - talk to you in a bit.

Tasty

I love how it has a glitchy robotic sound throughout the whole thing. The percussion specifically is awesome.

I wish I could get as specific as the reviews previous to this one, but this song is so far over my head and abilities I'd just sound like a dumbass lol, so I'll just keep it simple and ask a question.

How exactly did you make this? What did you use to arrange, what was your process on making the percussive sounds, etc. I must learn these techniques!

LJCoffee responds:

Hey man, Thanks!

Here's a quick rundown:
AcidPro, Kontakt3, Reaktor5, Massive

This was sequenced using AcidPro 6 - which is a great program IMO but anything that supports MIDI and VST's will do.

The drums are a combination of a few different Kontakt kits and a couple of modified Reaktor ensembles. I think those "glitchy robotic sounds" that you mentioned are probably the stuff coming from Reaktor.
I also used Kontakt to make the orchestra hits.
There are some heavily processed vocal samples from one of the libraries that I own - those are the airy reverby echo-ish female bits that you hear.
The pads were all patched together in Massive.

Send a PM if you want more detailed info.

Quite nice

Not sure why this hasn't been heard by more people. This is the kind of experimental track that I'd think the AP would appreciate most of all. Very smooth tracking, very tight sounds and no clips. You have a mastery of the effects you use, regardless of whether they are presets or not. Frankly, the whole anti-preset movement is a little silly since the vast majority of musicians from the dawn of the Synthesizer age have used presets rather than trying to emulate the Moog Elite and devoting large chunks of their lives to learning what every Osc. and LFO does to a sound.

That being said, the drums and pads are the best parts of this track. I've never really been one for IDM and the glitchier music, but this one holds onto a classic musical approach without venturing so far away from thematic tones and musical composition that it sounds more like a playroom full of babies pounding on blocks. Very nice track, keep these coming.

Peace

LJCoffee responds:

Wow - thanks for all of that! I was planning on doing a whole series of these with a common theme or two... All I need now, s the time :)
