A man repeatedly being hit in the face with a spade, now that might just be amusing, but just exploding, pah. It's been done before.
Actually this would have been a lot better if the author had paid better attention to the timing. And got rid of the canned laughter.
Or maybe changed it and showed a few pictures of an audience or something, so it was less irritatingly repetitive and artificial.
