Well you asked, "So how closely do the sprites resemble their real life counterparts?"
My answer is, "Quite close, but I hope you noticed that in order to really resemble their real life counterparts, they need to be a few hundred times bigger."
For being sprite art, uh-huh.

Pretty nice work there man. Spriting might look like easy job, but it certainly isnt.
First thing that comes to mind when I look at these, is Soldat.
You sire get the cigar.
Especially when with the subject has a fair amount of detail - making an odd number of pixels look like textured gun metal can be quite a challenge.
And yeah, I did get a couple of comments on another art website - one even claiming that I ripped straight from Soldat.
The interesting thing is that I originally sprited these at twice the size they are now - but I needed them to be smaller (so that their size can fit in with the other sprites that I was working on)
