Classic Atari style shoot 'em up

Great game, brings back memories of playing on the Atari. Nice visuals, love the explosions the lasers could use some work though. Maybe some more upgrades besides speed...if there are more then sorry. I got bored after getting to the boss on the first world. Nice game though. Well worth the time to play at least once. Good Job!

RedactedProfile responds:

well thank you. Yes i know the replay value is quite low, but i couldn't improve/add much else without going over the 5MB limit.

more upgrades will be available, like instant-collant for your weapons and shield-regen.

*siff*ahh the Atari..that was classic :) thanks for the review.

i liked it

but the other ships lasers are too big an come at u too fast its a little hard ta get past an i die like after 17 or 23 kills
pc
bryan

RedactedProfile responds:

the reason it kill your PC bryan, is the fact that when you shoot your lazer, it adds a number to the count, and the higher the count, the the more your temp-memory for your PC is destroyed. However, after every second wave, this count is refreshed, else there would be a MAJOR slow down time at the boss. Before i implemented the refresher, when i got to the boss on a 900MHz, i got a crisp 2fps ;) so it was more of a nessesity to add a count refresher on.

WOW man!

I'm beginning to notice that whenever something is made by X and Y studios, its quality. This is really good! I remember old Nintendo and Sega games that were exactly like this. I loved em. I'm liking this a whole lot, too. The graphics are amazing, the gameplay is quite nice, the sound is crisp and appropriate. There's not a whole lot I can say to improve this.

But there are some things:
First, the graphics are outstanding and all, but maybe its a little TOO graphics heavy. I have a reasonably powerful machine, and it still slowed down, even on low quality.

The text at the beginning scrolls a little too fast. I can read it, but I need to read it quickly, and I have a little trouble digesting it all. Y'know, extend the tween frames or something.

I'm not sure if they are bugs, but it would be cool if they were fixed up a little:
I got nailed a lot by an enemy I couldn't even see. If you could set it up so that the beam shooter ships have a lesser range, or so that they don't fire until they're fully on screen.

I also think the reason why I got nailed by an enemy I couldn't see was because the damage range on their weapons was too great. A few times a beam maxed its range out about an inch or two (on the screen) in front of my ship, but it still registered as damaged. Is that purposeful? I hope not, because taking damage from something I haven't been hit by is kinda annoying.

Other than that, I'm quite pleased with this game. I would've been happier with just a little bit of forward-back movement, and maybe a shield recharge here or there, but I can't complain about that. That's my fault that I suck at it.

EXCELLENT job!

RedactedProfile responds:

Thank you very much for your informative review Reddclaw. to answer a few things.
1. yeah it can be graphics heavy, especially with the flying debris being a small gradient, this quickly slows it down, im thinking of just making them a flat grey.
#2. Black Jaguar Studios is brand new, it used to be Viper Vision Productions, but that got scrapped, and thank god it did. else i would probably be still making crap, have "Studios" slapped to the end of your title really forces you to make bigger and better things.
#3. yeah i can read on screen pretty fast, so i dont quite have the same problem reading the scroling text, but i see where your coming from. ill be sure to add more motion tween frames to that.
#4. another reason the game might go slow on low quality, is the fact with the lazer you fire. Whenever you press the spacebar to fire, it adds 1 to a count for duplicating the movie clip of the lazer, and if this number goes past 100, the system resources quickly get demolished on any computer. however, i implemented a cunt refresher every second enemy wave to keep the crisp 30fps framerate up.
#5. i must be the only one who avoids those lazers well like that o.o; uhh, ill shorten them a bit. but the X-Scouts (the ones that fly horizontally downward) only could hit you a max of 4 times before they recharge, and you got 20 shield points, so they dont hurt you much as being annoying. Howeveer, the Kamakazi ships (big blue beam) their bevelled end still counts for being the rectangle, so i couldn't quite help the fact that even if that invisible corner hit you, you still get hit, but this will be fixed later on.
#6. a little forward and backward movment? why would you need that? but ill see about implementing it.
#7. the shield recharge, every 15 seconds, it replenishes your shield by 1 point. not a whole lot, but its there and has helped a few people out of a tight jam, but trust me, its there.
#8. you dont suck at it, i showed this to my entire class and they all dies ALOT of times, i HAD to put in the god mode cheat for them to even get past the third wave ^^;
#9. thanks man, very informative review, i liked reading it. if you want to go to the forums dedicated to R.O.D. the go to http://www.blackjaguar-studios.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=9 and post there.

thank you very much.

Pure Awesomeness

Looks like an awesome start to a great game, only real complaint I have is the ringing noise when you hit the boss. Can get a little annoying - maybe try something less irriating, otherwise its a great start. And if anyone found that hard... they should'nt be playing games to begin with. (^..^) -Nice start
