ITS MEATY MAYHEM!!!

A demo of a game I'm making for a school project (which should be finished later this year).

I drew the main character for cringetober 2023 and decided to roll with that for this game (i now realise they look a little too much like jellybean so please don't sue me jellybean PLEASE).

The final game will feature:

  • 3 worlds (with a castle and boss fight at the end of each world)
  • Voice acted cutscenes (with expert voice actors such as myself)
  • More than just one over world map theme for each world (sorry if it gets too repetitive)

Here's a sneak peek at what to look forward to in the final game:

If you think the game is goofy (dare I say cringe), don't worry i feel u man.

CONTROLS:

  • AD or arrow keys to move
  • Space to jump (hold for a higher jump)
  • Shift to sprint
  • Press against wall to wall slide (and jump to perform a wall jump)
  • Press down (or S) in water to sink faster
  • P to pause the game

also WHATEVER YOU DO, do NOT change tabs while watching a cutscene, it will cause the audio to go out of sync :( (trying to find a fix for the final game)

UPDATES:

[26th May] Fixed the enemy patrol bug (enemies getting stuck together)

[23rd May] Reworked wall jumping slightly to give the player a bit more control over their trajectory.

[20th May] Fixed a (second) bug with wall jumping (which cause the player to wall jump backwards).

[19th May] Added basic sound settings.

[18th May] Added varied jump height to walljumping (idk why this wasn't there in the first place but it's fixed now)

[17th May] Made swimming, walking and wall sliding less slow and slightly decreased hitbox sizes on spikes.

[16th May] Fixed a bug with wall jumping (which made wall jumping highly inconsistent).

  • A quick note in case anyone is wondering about their progress magically disappearing, every time I update the demo it will erase player progress (I think the binary file is being saved to a different location for WebGL). I will provide builds for Mac and Windows for the finished project, so you don't have to worry about this problem.

Hmm, a bit conflicted on this one! I do like the goofy vibes that this game gives off, the presentation is stylish, and I do think it has a pretty solid foundation for a nice platforming adventure as the levels showcased all of the essentials. On the other hand, though, it felt like all this game had was the bare minimum basic essentials and because of that, it wasn't memorable or interesting in any way apart from its goofiness, which felt like style over substance.

So yeah, right now this feels quite boring and devoid of any sort of interesting hook. It's impressive on a 'my first game' basis, sure, but it just feels like there is such a disparity between its stylish presentation and its lackluster gameplay that I can't help but expect more from this. My play session ended up feeling so repetitive, with every level just a remix of the same stuff and the music droning the same tune, over and over: wasn't necessarily bad, but it wasn't good either, just ok.

For other feedback, I do wish you could hold down when wallsliding to slide down faster, as there were a lot of times where it was tiresome to wait while you slowly go down. Also, sprinting was something that was barely apparent when you pressed the button: maybe it'd be better if it gave you a bit more of a boost like a dash, and either way it'd be nice to have some more pizazz to it, like kicking up some dust, to make the transition more pronounced.

Best of luck on future development! Despite my gripes, I do think it has some decent potential to become great, and I'll look forward to playing it!

This is really fun! Great graphics and controls.

One suggestion: don't reset the timer when you die. Multiple deaths should increase the time it takes you to complete a level.

BakethedBean responds:

Glad you liked it!

I made the timer reset in the interest of speedrunning levels (it would be kinda annoying to have to reset the time by exiting the level each time you screw up). However once you reach a checkpoint, it will not reset the time.

really good game but i feel at times your arse can be hard to control

incredible game but very short :c but putting that aside it is one of the best on newgrounds

The intro is worth everything

BakethedBean responds:

thats all I needed to hear.
