SPEEDMAN

Share Collapse

In the midst of an intergalactic conflict, Planet Platypus' greatest scientist, Dr. Hubone Rubella and his crack team of assistants have created the ultimate weapon- a god-like individual known as Speedman.

This is just the prologue to a larger series with more weird beaked humanoid aliens.

cool

Top tier animation. That stopped-time beatdown is iconic.

The animation quality is 10/10 amazing. The characters emote and gesticulate so naturally. I'm just pretty confused about the story. During the propaganda segment at the beginning, I thought you were setting up some kind of Starship Troopers-style satire where we later see that they were wrong about the octopus people, but then all we ever see of the octopus people is that they're a bunch of jerks after all. Then we get a setup where Speedman is an old cripple before he gets his powers, but there's no payoff for that because his feelings as a superhero are never examined. And that makes it all the more confusing when he goes berserk and attacks the scientists.

Bowz responds:

Great call out! I think unfortunately the Starship Trooper style intro and the Super Hero genre can preload expectations on how the story will play out.
The goal of the intro was to show the world is at war with an invading force, and there's a call to arms. This is why Speedman was created.
Speedman was meant to be a super hero to save the planet, but he was never actually heroic. All his actions where self indulgent, serving his ego and desires. In the end he lost control and went berserk with no reason to stop. He fully indulged in the intoxicating high of power. They never really knew who they were giving all this power to. Turns out it was a crippled maniac.

As a main character he does leave a lot to be desired. We never really get to know him and I can see how that's unsatisfying. We should have someone to connect with more.

This is going to be a series, so Speedman's story isn't over. It's more of a prelude to the series, and I agree it's not perfect as a stand a lone short.

Thanks for your comment!! I appreciate the more critical reviews.
