Here we are with Episode 4! Just like how Episode 3 was the last entry to use VN narration segments, Episode 4 is the last to feature the traditional Visual Novel style with static sprites and backgrounds. This episode was the first to feature animation for the show upon its initial release as well. Now the characters can blink, breathe, move, and do creepy head turns when they get into a mood.
I remember when I first discovered how to make the animations. Maganda (Lillie) and I were speaking together with Janey (Yumi) about working on future episodes. Maganda and I were getting a little concerned about the static VN appearance, so I mentioned that there was indeed animation within the character studio to experiment with. With it, we could alter character poses a little bit better, add body movement, and even mouth flaps for dialogue. Within a week of playing around with the studio -- and making Lillie do a couple of martial arts moves -- I was able to make simple animations for our pivotal scenes of Lillie's monologue, Yumi's dress up scene, and the final scene with Lillie reminiscing about her day. It was a pretty good first step that got us to Episode 5 and onwards. It's a little rough looking back, but it was the start of something very promising.
Thanks to experimenting, the entire look of the show changed and a world of possibilities opened up. This is one of my favorite episodes for that reason as well as for the story presented. Yumi is such a dynamic character and she's the key to the very small transformation that started in Lillie's heart. We'll definitely see more of her as the series progresses and I sincerely hope you look forward to it. She has a special episode down the line, now that we're talking about it~.
