Note: Many browsers will not allow this game to automatically play sound, so you might not hear anything until you interact with the project. This isn't a bug in my game, it's a bug in TurboWarp. Clicking the game window with your mouse or clicking the full screen button resolves this issue. Another bug in TurboWarp is when you scroll down or go into a new tab while the game is loading, the Stars won't be loaded in. To fix this, simply reload this page.

Escapism is a vertical space shooter created by yours truly. I would've finished this by last year but things kept on coming up and i kept on going on hiatuses. But that stuff doesn't matter now, because now it is here! I actually have some alpha, beta and prototype releases of Escapism that i might release on here depending on user feedback. This is actually my first proper game that i developed mostly by myself (i had some external help of course), and with that being said, constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated. While you're at it, please report any bugs you find too!

Below is some information about the game. I won't bore you with the details, so i'll only add the basic important stuff.

98% of the assets used in this game were made by me. WIth that being said, credit is given where credit is due.

Basics

iu_787821_8110419.png < This is a heart.

You start with 5 of these. When you take damage or get a bad power-up, you lose one. If you lose all five of them, you die and get a game-over

iu_787857_8110419.png < This is shield.

You start with 200 of it, when it is being used, it grants you protection. But for every ying, there is a yang, meaning that while you are using it, it depletes by 1 every 0.04 seconds and when it reaches 0, it goes recharges by one every 0.08 seconds. You can use your shield while it's recharging, but that will mean it will just deplete faster.

Controls

There is a "Controls" option in-game where you can see the controls for the game, but i'll add the default mouse and keyboard controls just to make it easy.

  • Arrow keys = move
  • Space key = start/pause/resume
  • A key = start/confirm
  • S key = back
  • Z key = shoot
  • C key = shield

The mouse isn't used at all in this game. Controllers are supported, but is kind of a beta feature, meaning not all controllers will work. For more information see the "Controls" option in the main menu.

Ranking

There are a total of 7 ranks one can get at the end of the game:

S, A, B, C, D, E and F

where S is the best rank and F is the worst rank. It would take too long to explain the intricacies of the rank system in full detail so i'll keep it short. The rank you get is determined by 3 variables:

  • Score
  • Time
  • Survival Bonus*

At the end of the game, these variables are calculated by adding all 3 of them together which gives us a 4th variable which is the overall score, and the higher or lower the overall score is, the better or worse rank you get.

*50 survival bonus points are given to the player every 60 seconds while in-game, this is separate from the normal score you get.

Power-ups

There are a total of 6 power-ups currently in the game, which each of them having their own unique properties and effects of course.

iu_787800_8110419.png

1-up gives you an extra heart when collected. If you collect this and already have the max amount of hearts, you receive 100 points instead which is added to your score

iu_787801_8110419.png

Shield-up gives you an extra 50 shield when collected. If you collect this and already have the max amount of shields, you receive 100 points instead which is added to your score

iu_787802_8110419.png

Score-multiplier adds 2 points to your score every 1/5th of a second (or every 0.2 seconds) for 30 seconds.

iu_787803_8110419.png

Armageddon (or bomb) destroy every asteroid and enemy ship on screen, adding a random number between 60 to 80 points to your score for every enemy ship killed and between 75-100 points for every asteroid destroyed.

iu_787804_8110419.png

1-down takes away 1 heart when collected. If you collect this and you are on your last heart, you die and thus get a game-over.

iu_787805_8110419.png

This one is pretty much self-explanatory; when Invincibility is collected (you guessed it), you get to be invincible for 30 seconds. While invincible, you take no damage and have the ability to one-shot everything. While invincible you start to cycle through basically every colour and you leave after-images behind you when you move.

Extras

  • There are some easter eggs in the game that only appear in a certain day/month of the year (e.g. December 12th)

  • The after-images you leave behind while using the invincibility power-up actually has the ability to also one-shot everything if they come in contact with them (it was an unintended side effect, but i liked it so much that i kept it in).

  • I went through like 3 or 4 revisions of the main menu theme before settling with the final version.

  • I don't think i'll be doing major updates to this game at all unless it's bug fixes or game-breaking glitches (and maybe some new features and mechanics, but that's a giant maybe). It was both fun and annoying developing this overall, I might even make a much better sequel depending on how this is received, it will be similar to 2D open-world games such as terraria (but in space).

  • I have some alpha/beta/prototypes of Escapism that i may release. Really shows how far this game has come in terms of development.

Interesting

i see a lot of potential here. the gameplay is genuinely fun, and the sound effects are good enough- the pixel art is nice as well, and i admire that you went through all the effort the make most assets! i do have some criticism, but as i understand you do not plan on changing the game, but i figured it might help in the long run. The game could really use a tutorial, as even with checking the description and reading i was unsure of how some game mechanics worked- for instance, not sure if its a bug or a feature, but you can run sideways into a rock and take damage while your shield is up. i think the key thing that bothers me though is that avoiding taking damage is a bit more difficult than you may have intended. with the background of shooting stars, it is very very difficult to discern some of the enemy airships fire, as their bullets move fast and appear to be white, just like the stars in the background. also.... mostly joking around, but your "f" when you get a bad rating is a bit wonky lol.... not that i would know, i was great from the start i swear.....

Tldr, i love galaga and this reminds me of galaga, but it could use some work. will probably not return to the game unless its bullet issue is addressed.
