Undying Mage

A mage that respawns over and over; getting stronger with each revive, thus making him the undying mage as the mage never really dies permanently, he always comes back for more.

The goal in this game is just to try to survive as long as you can. Each death makes you more powerful as every time you die, you get access to the upgrade menu where you can power up your stats.

This game is my submission to GameDev.tv's 2022 game jam.

Controls:

  • D Key - Move Right
  • A Key - Move Left
  • Space Bar - Jump
  • Left Click/Hold Left Click - Shoot/Cast Fireball Spell

Details:

  • Each time you die, your score gets added up to your total points which you can use to upgrade your stats.
  • Each upgrade cost 100 points!
  • Difficulty scaling goes faster the more upgrades you have to avoid the start from getting too boring when you already powerful!

Why not use spacebar to fire instead?

I think this game shows potential. But right now it doesn't feel like a game I could play a lot, Something i could play while having a short break, Or i'm taking a dump. First. Your spritework is amazing, However i would work on a few idle animation for the mage moving up and down a bit. It helps. Also as voodoochristian said "Why limit the fire rate so much? One of the enjoyable things about these "rogue ultra-lite" games is that you eventually get to turn your pew pew into a frickin laser." Which isnt what im getting here. This feels like a game that i could see on scratch.mit.edu. Not something on newgrounds. (also for upgrades I would work for a health upgrade.)

Thanks a lot for the feedback. When I first released the first version of this game to an itch.io game jam, the feedback I received there were talking about how fast you can be overpowered with the fire rate so I nerfed it a bit but it seems like the nerf was too much judging from the feedback I'm getting here which is something I plan on changing.

Great, but needs some work. Why limit the fire rate so much? One of the enjoyable things about these "rogue ultra-lite" games is that you eventually get to turn your pew pew into a frickin laser. Additionally, why not have a way to beat it? Maybe you have to spend 1,000,000 points and you unlock the ultimate spell which just wins as soon as you get into the next run? I love your sprite work.

DragunWF responds:

Thanks for the feedback and for pointing that out. Back when I first released the first version of this game on an itch.io game jam, the fire rate used to be a laser when your fire rate stat is maxed out. I first thought it was a bit too overpowered and made the game too easy judging from some of the feedback I got from that game jam but now that more peeps are mentioning the slow fire rate in the new version here, I realized that being overpowered is what makes roguelite games fun so I plan on changing the fire rate back with some extra changes in a future update.

Adding W for Jump would be helpful.

4.5 stars, interesting idea BUT you shouldn't have added the controls just in the description most people don't read it so they would have left if they weren't like me and patiently learned the controls slowly...

DragunWF responds:

Thanks a lot for the feedback and the rating! I'll make sure to add the information about controls next time in-game instead of only leaving it in the description for my future games.
