The First Step (第一步) is an immersive 360 virtual reality (VR) experience that focuses on bridging the language divide between domestic and international students at UNSW. As a representation of people's stories as told by them, my work thrusts players into a foreign university environment populated entirely by Mandarin Chinese speakers where domestic students, in turn, become the non-native speakers. This role reversal seeks to disorientate and confuse, not unlike the way an international student in Australia may feel when entering UNSW for the first time. Gameplay consists of making choices that lead to different player outcomes within three sequential stories, each focusing on an aspect of the language divide - miscommunication, colloquialism, and misunderstanding. These narratives share the realities of an international student’s struggles with the language gap and explore the nuanced nature of assumptions and experiences of international students at UNSW.
