Exclusive! “Dead Darell: The Kid without Tears – Episode 1” Animation

Share Collapse

Here's my very first animation that I've ever done. It's about a young man who grew up with divorced parents...he grows up fighting monsters and villains in a dystopian city called, Death City.

I made this animation with free software. Post-Production was made with Filmora9. If you'd like a FREE web-comic of "Dead Darell" please, email me: sodapartynetwork@gmail.com

The execution was pretty good. I admit I was expecting more humor, though.

SodaPartyNetwork responds:

Thank you for the review, BurlySkewTheater!

You know? This was quite good! It's clear there is a big influence from Adventure Time (I hope the quality doesn't go down the drain like the actual show after some seasons) in character design, style and movement.

The animation could be better, of course. There are some typos in the subtitles (I REALLY appreciate that you added them, though, because the audio wasn't 100% and that really helps those for whom English is not their first language... Thanks for that). Also, I think you abused the idea of quick still angle shots, way too many cuts.

I also find it to be a little bit weird, quirky if you want... That he became this dark superhero because his parents divorced... But maybe there's more to it and you plan to show it in the future. Anyways, keep it up and I wish you luck in this project!

SodaPartyNetwork responds:

Hi CaminanteNocturno, thanks I really appreciate your review. There are points in the animation that could have been upgraded...but it was all in good fun. I plan on making Episode 2, so, that should be fun as well. I was doing some experimenting with Episode 1 and I've learned a lot of techniques along the way. Than you again for your support!

Definitely a Newgrounds Series! It's a Flash animation mix of characters and scenarios we've all seen before. Mixed into something that can become truly original over time. But as is, The fight scene does need a previous scene for context of the world this takes place in. More detials least. Keep up the great work!

Also: I like that the characters are based off of Marvel, Not DC. Marvel is best in my book.

SodaPartyNetwork responds:

I'm happy you liked it, JoeSketchConcepts-NG. Making an animation for the first time almost always has it's learning curve and with lots of room for advancement. I knew there were plenty of gaps in terms of the story and some much needed scenes...such as a dialogue setup. Rather than procrastinate and wait till I make a 'perfect' debut I just dove in. I'm already working on Episode 2. Thank you for the tips and encouragements I really appreciate it. Cheers, mate!

Pretty good cartoon right down to the heavy Full Metal Alchemist "inspiration". I wanna say some Hajime no ippo but a lot of things do that. I almost missed the Cowboy Bebop Movie part. It's like a fun guessing game where I try to guess them all. How do you choreograph such extended fight scenes I wonder?

SodaPartyNetwork responds:

Thank you for the review, BOSS8NULL. It's my first animation and it's been quite a learning curve...and you're right about the Anime references. I figured if the very popular Naruto can get some 'inspiration' from Cowboy Bebop and Jackie Chan scenes then why can't I? It seems to work for them.
