Commands:

- ARROWS to move
- Z to jump and skip scenes
- S to scale game pixel ratio (1:1, 1:2, 1:4)
- C to restart from last checkpoint (press twice)
- R to reset game from start (press twice)
- H to hide lifebar

How To Play:

- The plants are poisonous and will reduce your heart count. If they reach less than zero, you are dead and will start from last checkpoint.

- Pressing Z for a different length of time will allow you to make shorter or longer jumps. Both are required to complete the game, so practice!

- You can fall off a ledge and still jump once. This is a vital gameplay mechanic that you will need to progress, since it will allow you to jump under certain obstacles

- Choose the optimal route for completing the game. Sacrifice either visibility, hearts or jumping range to progress. Be careful with your choices, and reach the end alive!

About:

The original compo game was made in 48 hours for Ludum Dare 43 by me, fullmontis. The full game too about 4 weeks to complete.

This game is great! The vibe is like halfway between Binding of Isaac and Cave Story. (But smaller, of course.) I like that you don't need every heart to get the good ending, but it's still hard enough to feel earned. And the bit where you still need to climb out at the end instead of just jumping to a cutscene is a nice little touch. Plus the girl is cute. 5/5

I'm so happy you enjoyed it!

Cute, heartwarming little game. I made it all to the both endings and just love to play through it again and again. The difficuilty is just about right and forces you to make meaningful decisions. Would love to see more games of the siblings.

Review of the full version, for the record.

This is an amazing game with a deep meaning. The gameplay is simple yet challenging, and it really makes you think twice about your decisions. I wish there was some in-game indicator about the plants, but I suppose that touching them once is more than good enough to learn the lesson.

for those confused about a restart button, simply double tap r

I have yet to get the good ending, but I have to say I like it so far.

fullmontis responds:

Thank you so much for the kind review!

The game is pretty fun to play and has an unique idea. The difficulty can be pretty frustrating though.
I'd recommend making the hint about being able to store your jump by walking off ledges a little bigger. It took me longer than I dare to admit to figure that out.

This is a freaking great concept. I would love to see a full game that runs on this mechanic of choosing between sacrificing health--which you may not have--or permanently impairing your senses for the rest of the playthrough. The graphics are also simple yet clean, and the controls feel tight. I do have a couple of minor issues, however: Because the opening screen didn't include any kind of prompt, I actually thought it was an error screen and started toying with my browser extensions to see if something was wrong. Additionally, as far as I can tell, there isn't a way to restart the game unless you refresh, which was a bit annoying, especially because the servers went down while I was playing and I had to wait until they were back up to continue.

All in all though, I'm quite impressed. I hope you come back to this idea sometime; perhaps make a full game out of it!
