Author Comments

HCFF, or Hovercraft freedom fighter, is a personal project of mine that I've been working on for approximately 2 years to date. As this is the beta release, there is a "reset" feature. Press "R" if you ever get stuck somehow and it will reset the level and put you back on the starting pad.

the title song is available for download here, for free:

.
Battle your way through wave after wave of enemies... trying your skill- and your luck- as you make your way towards an uncertain future.
.
Changelogs:
1.3.1: fixed a bug that bade the core stage impossible, fixed a bug with the audio.

1.3.2: improved performance, added in secret bonus level at the end. it should keep things FIREd up...

Good start. The intro makes the story sound much more interesting than the gameplay actually is. The sound effect for the computer text is very annoying by the way. The level design and background art are very basic. The music that actually plays during the levels are okay. I'm not a fan of how tight the controls are. I really want my hovercraft to move quickly up, down, left and right to the EXACT tiles, and not be in-between tiles where it's easier to be shot. It's either that or remove the WASD movement, and replace it with moving using the mouse, and aiming with WASD instead, that way you could drift past opponents. This game would be good with upgrade paths too.

The first levels resemble a very trivial arcade, but I like the later stages with large locations, passwords and keys (starting from the "laboratory"). It would be cool if the game immediately started with these gameplay elements.

I quite enjoy this game, it has a very simple and charming appeal to it. The fact that very little information is given besides basic controls was frustrating at first, but with a little push its easy enough to find out what does what, not to mention it has a satisfying feel to it when you figure it out. Such as invincibility or shooting specific blocks to kill enemies. It's fun to explore the entire level to see how much love this creator has put into making this game. Once finding the exit there is little reason to explore the rest of the level besides the fact of finding out if there was something, or maybe you are a completionist that enjoys killing mobs. Controls are very nice, being able to get that shot in on an enemy is crucial and i appreciate when a mob can be stunned. I think having 2 lives is a good challenge as well. Seeing as there are more than enough healing items to get yourself through. This game reminds me of games pre-2000 in a few ways and its a nice change up from what big companies have been bringing out. I look forward to seeing more from this creator, or when this gets out of beta. I think it has a lot of potential.

If you like puzzle games i will be the first to admit the later levels will puzzle you but it's fun and has that worth while feel when you know you reached the end. The creator sure has thrown a couple loops in there but enjoyable nonetheless. My tip for those reading through the comments for spoilers is don't hug the wall. That only works in real life ;)

Basically the game is ok. I don't see any sense in discovering the levels once the exit is found (and on some levels the exit can be found pretty fast. But it's damn frustrating only to have 2 lives. Some levels require to kill many enemies and after trying the same steps over and over again ... you know.
