Daniel's Journey

Share Collapse

Author Comments

Join Daniel in his quest to find his home and uncover the mysteries that he encounters. Nothing is just as it seems at first glance, sometimes not even a second one clears it.
Do you think you can uncover all the secrets hidden in plain sight about the true meaning of the events?
Side note: I had lots of trouble with sounds. If the music or gunshot noise is not appealing to you, there are buttons in the top-right corner to disable both.
UPDATE:
-Minor graphics changes.
-Screen is now smaller.
-Added simple jump animation.
-Completely redone music and fixed the bug where it overlapped itself when resetting or getting killed.
-Added a better hp bar for the player that also has numbers.
-Gun now deals twice as much damage.
-Fixed missing tutorial.
-Other small changes.

I like game the music is ok I like
I like the levels
But I don't liked crow cuase have damage and why it's a chicken as big as a House?
Really man why?

CristianNic responds:

Thank you for the review!
Well, about the crow, it's supposed to have high damage so you don't just rush the early levels.
The rooster is part of the things that have a hidden meaning, but only part of that hidden message. The second part is on level 2. And the size is mostly as a joke and to prevent you from just jumping over it to escape.

I didn't love this game but I did not fully hate it. I appreciated you could mute it (Not a lover of the music). I saw your reply and yes it would be nice if you fixed the screen size but, I just zoomed out (ctrl and minus buttons) and I saw it fine. I also didn't like that there was no health bar. Would be helpful rather than the box getting bigger on the person on the bottom. Keep working and keep creating!

CristianNic responds:

Thank you for the review! I made some of the changes already, but haven't uploaded them.
Would a hp bar or some text telling exactly how much hp you have be better?
I'll also work more on the music.

You see that "R" symbol on the top-right screen? I dare you to turn on the music, and then mash that R symbol 30 times in a row. What you're hearing is the best example on how to describe this game.

Daniel's Journey is the next disaster to bless the newgrounds library. I wanna say it's a parody game, but guess what: it's not! Something actually thought this was a good idea and posted it up for everyone's displeasure. The first mistake the game makes is having the screen bigger than your computer monitor, so you wind up having to scroll up and down all the time just to read below or see what is above you. And the some of the story text is active during live gameplay, when enemies are trying to kill you!! You wanna read the story? Deal with the enemies first, but of course doing that skips the dialogue entirely so you never know what it was trying to say unless you're a good multi-tasker!! WTF!?!

Level designs are horrid! In early game, the story goes nowhere, and edges on longer than it needs to be. You are running back & forth pressing switches for 2 to 3 levels in a row, having to avoid angry birds that will hom in on your position. They will lock-on to the player, so in most cases, there is no way to dodge when they swoop in on you, and you wind up taking forced hits to complete a level. If you die, there is no death animation, and you just immediately start back at the beginning of the level with no time to absorb what just happened.
- Get this: If you manage to find one, you can use the bushes... the SAME BUSHES IN THE BACKGROUND THAT YOU HAVE NO IDEA OF TELLING IF IT'S PART OF THE GAMEPLAY to disorientate the birds. Furthermore, standing in the bushes protects you from attacks, so the birds will just fly right by. But the second you leave those bushes, every bird in the area resumes their attack, and begins to gangbang your a$$!!! It doesn't matter if you wait until they fly further away because 9 times out of 10 they're gonna come back and get you anyway! What's the point of having bushes here if you're not going to be protected?? There needs to be more bushes, and it needs to be more intractable so players know it's part of the gameplay!

It takes way too long to get a gun in this game. When you finally get the gun, you will be horribly disappointed. It has a lack of impact behind every shot, and the damage is so low you'd swear you're firing cotton balls! And it doesn't help you at all against the birds!

Assuming you get this far, you eventually fight a boss that is supposedly angry at you for something you've done which I won't say for spoiler reason. They take on the form of a sun and fire infinite energy everywhere. You're expected to dodge it all, and defeat them, and it takes forever!

In the later part of the game, entire levels are nothing but boss battles. So you go from animal ownage to firing BB guns at boss enemies that feel like they're made of steel. There is no balance in any of these level designs. It's so bad that it hurts...

- There's no jumping animation for the player, or death animation for enemies.
- The indication of when you take damage is poor, so sometimes you never know if you got hit until you scroll down to look at your character picture.
- Same song on repeat every 34 seconds! It's nice that the developer put in a mute button but it makes them look lazy to not adding a variety of music.
- The graphics are so bad, you can latterly see the cookie-cut land masses.
- Lack of enemy variety for the 2D shooter style approach, and the few emeries that are in this game are unoriginal.

The graphics, the animations, the music & sounds used, the level designs, the enemy designs, everything about this game is bad! The only thing I haven't fully talked about yet is the story...

There's no secrets in this game! You just get from point A to point B, and you win! Everything else does the work for you, leaving no mystery! There's no special items to find, secret endings or anything! There is nothing to find in this game!

I'm trying real hard not to spoil the story for you guys in case anyone really is interested in it, but I can tell you that it isn't worth the effort. Daniel's Journey the game, is a failure! The only good part of the game is it's controls, but it's expected! We expect this by now in our games. However, it doesn't matter anyway because what little enjoyment to be had with the controls is ruined by sloppy animations and laggy frame rates. It only takes the first level for you to immediately realize how quickly things will go downhill. And then the rest of the game will proceed to test you, raping your soul until you're unable to withstand any more. There is no fun to be had here, and feels like the game was made during someone's bathroom break.
If Daniel's Journey were to be fixed up, it could be a 4 out of of 10, a 5 out of 10, maybe even a 7 out of 10 if everything was looked into. But whatever this is right here is a 1!!! 1 out of 10 - The lowest it can possibly go! Does it deserve anything else? F*** no! I want the author, the developer, or whoever made this game to turn on Google Chrome (if it isn't on already), go to newgrounds, and then play this game. Do a full-playthough, and then you can tell me everything I said in this review is inconsistent. In most cases, a 1 out of 10 usually means that the game cannot be completed due to bugs or glitches, and is lacking in every aspect (music, graphics, gameplay, controls, story, theme) But in this case, it's how bad the game actually is! The 1 point represents the effort the creator put into the game -- there is nothing worth phrasing here!!

Final Verdict: 1 out of 10
NG Rating: Not even 1 Star
**DESTROYED**

CristianNic responds:

First of all, thank you for the very thorough review.
I never thought about someone mashing the mute button 30 times, then pressing reset, but now I know, thanks to you. I will fix this as soon as possible.
You are right about the screen. I didn't think it through. Its size is good for my monitor and aspect ratio, but I can clearly see why for some people it would be annoying.
About the text, I wanted it to be more dynamic, but apparently that wasn't a good idea. The detailed instructions about the bushes and how they work were in the game, but were never added into a message item. A huge mistake on my part. Also, if I added more bushes, the game became too easy. It was intended that the enemies hit you a few times.
Getting a gun early on makes the puzzles obsolete. With it, you'd just have to run from button to button without fearing anything, especially since you can shoot from the safety of the bush. In any case, I doubled the damage of the gun.
It would be impossible to even try to dodge all the projectiles of the "sun" boss. You can dodge many of them, but it's pointless to try and dodge them all.
The level design is almost impossible to change anymore without having to remake the entire game, unfortunately.
I haven't got much experience with animations or graphics, but I will improve and see what I can do to fix them.
The music that is now was not the original one. It was longer, more relaxing and I think more appealing. I had an accident and lost the entire progress on that melody. I was so angry I had to take a break from it all. I was never able to recreate it and this was the result.
The mysteries that I'm talking about are not the kind you just find hidden somewhere on the map. They are hidden in the plot, in names, in objects. That's why I said they are hidden in plain sight.
I have played it from start to finish over 20 times and I had another 3 beta testers. Yes, some things I missed without realizing. Now I am aware of them and can try to improve, at least.
I will upload the changes once I fix everything I can.

CristianNic responds:

Thank you! Actually, it's not my first game, but it is the first time I try to make something in this genre.
