If this doesn't describe what a "shitty art game" is, I don't know what does. I'm a huge fan of the "art game" genre because most of them tell an interesting story in a unique way. This game, however, is a time-consuming experience with very little game play and very little substance. Point A to B to A to C to A to etc is boring, requires little to no effort, thinking, or anything that really makes a game a game. And while the tale about "a boy who goes to lengths to please his girl only to fade away" is nothing special storywise, which is the backbone to a "art game" like this.
I will praise you for the excellent colors and effects as the player goes through this narrow world, however nothing really stands out as the majority looks the same minus minor scene changes like "water" and "house". The music was beautiful and put the game in the right frame of mind.
Tediously slow but nice
This is one of those "art" games, so stay away if you don't like those. I actually like art games a whole lot, they tend to be my favourite flash games. This entry however, failed to please me. At first, the game seems nice: tasteful simple graphics, effective emotive music. But then you start moving, and you ask yourself: why is my character moving ... so... slow.... ? It feels like he's moving through molasses. Maybe that's the intention, but the result (at least in my case) is only aggravation. Not that I mind a slow-paced game, it's the awful controls that kills the mood for me. In addition to that, the game is only a "fetch the items" quest: from the start you know exactly where it's going, and it ends with a whimper.
Still, a nice attempt, shows a lot of potential, but remember, even in art games, the gameplay is king :)
I liked the music, however there was no gameplay at all.
I understand what you were trying to do but this couldn't help but come across as pretentious to me. Maybe its just me but it seems like independent designer is trying to go after what Limbo did and though i appreciate the increased view of games arrr art this still felt as if it insisted upon itself. I'm all for games that try to make an artistic statement but do they all have to be black white or grey platformers? Of course its one of the best styles for a story such as this nevertheless it would have been best to break away from Limbo and its copies. Great music though.
I believe someone else mentioned this...
...But they're right. This is an art game, with a heavy emphasis on "art." There is little innovative gameplay to speak of here. It feels like it's trying too hard to be clever. Here's a suggestion for next time, because this is lovely and you can do better: Focus on creating something truly original. It's wonderful, but I feel like I've played it before. An art game can be more than this-- Push the envelope. Blow our minds.
