Telling a story that's happened to everyone at some stage is always a good idea.
You're animating style is very good, but maybe next time leave out the random ring-collecting sound effects.

They wern't random, if you pay attention the only times I use them is when Rings were involved, as the sound would have been used in the game. <:

Those were the days.
This takes me back to my childhood of playing this game as well. However, with sonic and tails for the last special stage you needed more then 150 rings on the final lap to get the last choas emerald you needed 190 rings. But other then that this flash took me back.

You know, I made sure to get EVERY thing right in this, color scheme of the pipe and all.. And I forgot the Ring count..
I might go back and fix it on a later date, but yeah, my bad~
