First I want to say that the reviewer below me is probably mistaken about the controls. Reviewer "thehitcher03" is probably walking off the edge of platforms and then hitting jump, which of course causes you to use your double jump.
Anyway, the game was slick and responsive. Great retro soundtrack. Reasonably frustrating challenge. But it is too short for a higher rating. I mean, I got all coins on my first run through, and it only took like 20 minutes. I was going to give it 6, but it was awesome fun. I'd love to see like 50 more levels and maybe some secrets, easy/hard paths, enemies, etc. etc. There's so much you could do with this game!
It's pretty good as it is, though.
The music is awesome, bursting with retro goodness with a ninja-like feel. I can say the same about the graphics; pixellated, but dark and ninja-like. It comes together to make a unique, impressive looking, and sounding, game. The gameplay itself is sound, being simple and easy to grasp; avoid the obstacles and get to the next screen. The fact that you get unlimited tries is a perfect counterweight to the tricky platfoming and hazards, making you plan out your route after a little trial and error, making it all the sweeter when your well-thought out route succeeds.
Unfortunatley, it is the controls which prevents this game from reaching beyond a seven from me. They keys you need to use are perfect, no problem there; it's the fact that the jump button is so ridiculously sensitive that ruins this game. Precise platforming is imperative to this game, but a mere brush of the jump button will have that ninja double jumping into a nano-second after his feet have left the ground. It makes the game hard for all the wrong reasons; it's not our lack of skill, it's the way too strong sensitivity of the jump button.
Whilst the sheer charm of the game and the lust for the challenge may make many of us overlook this huge problem, and even complete the game, it's not enough to see it past a seven, or at least not from me.
Overall, a good game that would be great after a few fixes.
this is a major improvement to meat boy. there are new abilities you have such as double jumping and sliding ( which i love the most )
I simply love it!
This retro style is just awesome! The jumping is rather glitchy, though. Particularly near edges; it's rather easy to do those "air jumps" when you think you're on the ground. The glitchy jumping makes the game harder than it should be, but it's not unbeatable. End Point: Fun Game, Jumping be glitchin' like hell.
fun but frustrating
141 deaths and 130 of them was from one level
