Froggie The Fly Catcher

Author Comments

This is a game I developed as part of my internship at an internet company. The target audience is (teenage) girls and casual players. Keep this in mind when playing the game as it has influenced my design choices.

The game was intended to be far more challenging but I had to tone down the difficulty curve in order to cater to the intended players.

Also, excuse the gratuitous advertisements (website plugging) as this game is intended as a promotion tool.

This is only my second game I have developed, so any criticsm and or feedback is most appreciated.

Game controls and instructions are included within the game.

Enjoy...

-------------------------

Game Controls : Play with either the mouse or the keyboard.

Mouse:
Move the mouse left or right to make Froggie jump in that direction.

Use the left mouse button to make Froggie shoot out his tongue.

Keyboard:
Use the left or right arrow keys to make Froggie jump in that direction.

Use the up arrow key or spacebar to make Froggie shoot out his tongue.

Very polished and addictive.

Couldn't stop playing,..a lot of fun.

Not really the game for me

Its not really the game for me, but mind you, I'm not part of your targeted audience :P I do know thats its well made, and quite a bit challenging getting some of those flies sometimes.

Not a bad effort...

...but some suggestions (for next time; I realize this is finished):

- consistency of controls: if you're going to use the space bar to throw the tongue, don't use the mouse to jump (or vice versa). Sure, you can mix & match sometimes, but this is for casual gamers; don't confuse them. Heck, it confused ME.

- increase difficulty according to skill. Yes, again I understand that you had to "keep it easy" -- but that doesn't mean keeping the player teetering on the edge of 1/2 speed forever. I'd suggest that (if you DID have it to do over) after a certain point (say, 3/4 of the way through the speed bar), there's no going back. That way there's a (slightly) forced sense of progress. Even casual gamers don't like to be bored.

- shorter instructions, simplified. "Game color"!? How about not naming it, and just saying "catch flies that are this color"? The instructions were too long; any casual gamer just seeing them would be turned off. Plus, dude -- include the controls in the instructions.

Okay, there you go. My two cents. I didn't care for the character art much either, but that's a stylistic thing, so don't worry about it.

ChrisKay responds:

- I opted for both controls since different players prefer different styles. By keeping both control schemes 'active', the player can mix and match controls.

- The difficulty only starts to get tricky Speed 6 and up. As I mentioned, this was a deliberate choice. The speed gets faster over time no matter if you play well or not (it takes a little more than 1 minute per speed level). The speed bar you refer to is the time bar. As explained in the game instructions, it empties out (when empty it's game over) and you fill it by catching flies.

- This is 1 of the things I am least happy with. But it was either a choice of lots of text or many pages of instuctions. The control instructions are included in the game. (if you meant here in the author comments I have updated it).

All in all there are a few things I would do differently a second time around since I am still learning.

Thanx for your response/opinion.
