Virtual Human Snow Fight

I created this along with my co-worker, Mickey DeLorenzo at Hall Media Productions, located in Philadelphia, PA. We wanted to create a fun Christmas greeting card game, but we wanted to go beyond the standard cartoon look of Flash.

Therefore, we made a game that uses video footage of humans in an office tossing snowballs. The game is meant to be easy and shouldn't take long to beat. But the concept of it, using real humans instead of vector art, is revolutionary when it comes to interactive games.

To create it, we shot and green screened everyone in the office in our production studio. I then did the majority of the keying to give everyone a transparent background, then resized them and placed them in the scene. In addition, different levels of grounds (the foreground, background, middleground, etc) were masked out to cover up places where people were standing behind chairs and tables. I then exported these into Flash as PNG movie sequences with an alpha channel and worked with Mickey in coding them in Flash.

The project took almost 2 weeks to go from concept to swf. The most time consuming part was the keying and scaling/masking stage, which took almost a week to do by its self, because the clips had to be edited down, resized, and positioned.

I do wish the final game was more polished than this, and had increasing difficulty levels. However, considering we didn't start until the second week into December, we were in a real time crunch to get it out before Christmas!

yerr

i agree, too short. Good concept and fun while it lasted

Funny.

It was very well made. But i'm shearing my opinion with the guy below...too short man. But I'll give you 9/10 becose everything else was perfect.

fun for a short while

it was fun, but too short

For a quick gimmick it looks really good

"But the concept of it, using real humans instead of vector art, is revolutionary when it comes to interactive games" - hmm... not really. Its been done quite a lot before (though not so much in Flash games, if that's what you mean).

Anyway, the level to which you've got people to merge into the background is great. People grabbing onto desks and walls, hiding behind things... it looks really good. Yeah, the game could use a bit more polish in some places - the snowballs could use some shading or something, and the hit detection is a bit off - but a lot of effort has been put in to this and it really shows.

short but wow!

almost real! superb work out there dude. only......i miss some music. hehe i could hit some targets more times, should just hit ones and dissapear.
