Well it depends on what kind of sword and what kind of gun. If it's a spaz shotgun and a little sword then go with the gun. If it's something like a handgun and a katana then go with the sword.

in my opinion swords are much better than guns. Swords take a lot of skill to wield. there are too many different styles to think of.
you can't Aijutsu decapitate anyone with a gun either. >:D

the fastest u can swing a sword is maybe 60 -90 mph a bullet is traving faster and its got WEIGHT behind it and if that doesnt go thru then how a sword will?

Sadly swords are totaly obsolete in a serious fight nowadays. (by serious, i mean something you're prepared for. i.e. a battle. Not, being ambushed in an alley)

The only remaining advantage of a sword is surprise. Swords can slice through kevlar body armor pretty nice. And no one is going to be wearing plate mail anymore.

People might think you're all powerful after you've seen these guys in anime and video games use swords to destory 13 guys with guns.

In real life you come charging after a guy with a 9mm you're getting a cap in your ass.

Actualy all you have to do is become strong like in dbz then you dont have to worry about guns (please no flaming :-P)

I'd say you're better off using both. In close quarters a sword, or even a dagger really shines over guns. At range, a gun, obviously rules a sword's school.

But if I had to go with one or the other I'd probably pick a sword that could shoot energy projectiles like in zelda ^_^

One inch steal plate? Are you sure that's not SWAT armor or something? As far as I know, bullet proof vests are made of kevlar and the highest levels have like 1/2 inch steel. A japanese sword could easily cut through the kevlar and a machette styled sword might dent the plate. With the right amount of force a pointed sword can stab right through that.

I'd be carrying all sorts of weapons with me, but I would prefer a gun because it's more modern

I say both. Cause you need a gun if the other guy is shooting at you at a far range and a sword for close range. So both are good if you are strong and thinking carefully.

Guns work just as well up close as they do from 300 yards away That's why no one uses swords anymore. The "fight" from Raiders of the Lost Ark comes to mind...

You shouldn't believe everything you see in Final Fantasy games. Come up to an uzi-wielding guy with an intent to kill and the biggest damn sword in the universe won't keep your ass from being riddled with bullets.

Realistically give me a gun anyday but then when the climatic battle starts make a katana appear in my hands for the effect. Move over John Woo I don't even need to pretend to have a plot.

yea, i have. I was gonna bring it up. The sword is a beautiful weapon, and wielding it is truely an art (in all forms of swordsmanship). But logically, if I had to choose between the two for a real fight, I'd choose gun. I'd still wanna know how to use a sword though.

btw, The Last Samurai was the best movie I've seen since The Pianist (insanely good). No joke.

As many have mentioned, both are effective depending on the situation.

A gun has more range, but has limited effectiveness as a short supply of bullets can mean that the gun is obsolete from a long range.

A sword has a short range, but can be used infinitely assuming that the user has enough experience using it.

Just to clear shit up, police department standard issue "bullet proof" vests ARE generally made of kevlar.
They are not capable of stopping swords, knives or rifle rounds.

My roommate has been shot in the shin and kneecap, and being a witness to said shooting, I can assure you a gunshot wound can be a horrible and torturous wound indeed.
