We spent the past few weeks tinkering with different Madness Day preloader ideas and ultimately decided to try something a little different this year.
With the advent of Actionscript 3.0, we've suddenly found ourselves having to make two versions of every preloader. Also, with the introduction of our Flash Ads system, ads often take the place of a traditional preloader, which complicates the ability to maintain a unified theme amongst event day submissions.
For Madness Day 2008, we are experimenting with a SPLASH SCREEN. This .FLA file contains a movie clip that you simply paste on your first frame, before pasting your preloader or ad in a layer above it
The splash screen should be aligned to the BOTTOM RIGHT of your stage. To align in Flash, click the splash screen movie clip to select it and press CTRL+ALT+3 to align it right followed by CTRL+ALT+6 to align to the bottom. If this doesn't work, your alignment mode might not be set "to stage." Hit CTRL+ALT+8 to toggle "to stage" and try again. You can also use the alignment toolbar but that's harder for me to explain without pictures. :)
Once the splash screen is in place, you can paste any preloader you want over top of it. This allows everyone to share a universal Madness Day 2008 background theme, while still being empowered to run unique preloaders or Flash Ads.
If you choose not to run an ad, we recommend downloading the new Madness Preloader! If you simply can't stand the splash screen idea, you can just use the preloader by itself and put us in our place... But being a team player is always NICE.

I've attached some pictures of what your splash screen may look like after you insert an ad or preloader. These shots are based on a 550x400 submission, which is getting a bit cramped. In the future, consider moving towards the standard 16:9 aspect ratio (like widescreen TV). Examples include 600x338, 640x360, 720x405 (my fav) and 800x450. The splash screen will work with any size, as long as you align it to the bottom right. If your submission is less than 400 tall, you might need to slide it down to fit the title. Ok GOOD LUCK. This weekend is the final stretch; Madness Day is on MONDAY! Fuck Garfield.
