Well this morning i seen a programme on T.V. and it detailed how up to the 1900's schools used to teach the alphabet with 27 letters....the 27th being this little fucker &.
I thought this very weird and wanted some thoughts on it.
Anyone, care to open the debate ??
& was a letter!? but it's not even a NUMBER!!!

well, the german alphabet would have 27 with that ß thingy... although they might drop a few letters... and I'm assuming ö and ü aren't counted as seperate letters.

I thought the characters ö and ü could be spelled out with oe and ue (they're called umlauts btw) , so I don't think they're counted as letters. The same goes with ß, which is a shortcut for two s's, as in ss
Apparently it was called something like the Andpersay ??? Then it got devolved to the And we all know and love. Same as ! Is io in ancient greek (i think)...so they put the o under the i, io i think means "surprise" not sure though.

If you ask me, "&" is the word "and" abbreviated, thus it is a word and not a letter.

hey i have the correct 27 letter, it is pronounced: pissoffyoubender and has been dissused since 1459. (not im not saying the simble to ne one here. lol) so use this one free as you want!

Well language evolves all the time so I should imagine that at one time there were even more letters being taught. But over time it changes and so we get to where we are today. I mean look at the Chinese alphabet, that has an insane amount of letters. Indo-European languages tend to have followed a similar course so I guess it would be similar in alphabet structure. The Welsh alphabet for example has 30 letters but these are combinations of letters as they are divided into the type of sounds that they make.
In Scandinavia we have 29 letters.
They're just the same as the ones else were like A,B,C,D,E.........but then it changes:W,X,Y,Z,Æ,Ø,Å.
And in Russian and some other different Eastern Europe countries they have many more.
Plus they have extremely many "letter/signs" in Asia.

LOL What does it sound like, aand where did it go? Even at 27 letters it's easier for figure out than the Cherokee Alphabet....84 characters. Talk about confusing...

I couldn't actually imagine ampersand being used in the alphabet but I do see it very often consideing that I have to use it often in my computer science programs often. The thing that strikes me as crazy are the types of words that are being introduced into the dictionary, never thought I'd see the day.
