There may be an easy way to make transparent-background sprites that I don't know of.
This is my hard way, though.
Make sure the item you want to use as a sprite is against a solid color backgound in the rom.
"Print scrn" to get a bitmap capture of the entire screen.
"Paste" your bitmap into an image editing program, then crop away everything except for a square containing the item you wish to be a sprite and it's single-color background. Save it as a .gif.
Open http://gifworks.com/ and then use their "file open" command under "file" to import your .gif. Then choose "edit">"add transparency". Then save the now transparent-background .gif.
Repeat the process from the beginning to get the other frames of the sprite if you want an animated one.
If your extracting for the purpose of making a flash animation, then other sites like www.rpgicons.com or www.gsarchive.net might have them.
