Early Pico-Day
It's sort of like how I frown upon the kids who get to open one present early on Christmas... the fun is the anticipation. Waking up knowing there is going to be a wall of blue-colored submissions flowing into the portal is awesome, especially knowing that each one delivering it's own wonderful punch.

I don't know - it's a bit different. On Christmas you have a choice between presents and a lie-in, and I like my lie-ins :) With Pico day you don't really have any exciting alternatives.

Heh, guess it'll be really short since Pico Day is tomorrow :P As for early submissions, I can see why as the submission might get more recognition today than tomorrow, but still, it isn't really Pico Day yet.

GTA IV

I was never big on the GTA series before, but so far, it's amazing. It really does seem like a living, breathing city you're in. The voice-acting and cutscenes are fantastic. The gameplay is fantastic. I turned on the TV and found a channel with Bas Rutten on it. That was also amazing. The Collectors Edition comes in a metal safety deposit box. Like, with a lock and everything. It's awesome.

If you can, definitely check it out.

GTA

I've been playing it for 10 hours now (I take breaks -.-). It's a beauty, but it takes some time getting used to. The amount of detail that has been spent in the creation of Liberty City is bizarre.

GTA IV
My life beyond Flash is being a historian of early video game culture and adoption into mainstream society... and GTA IV is already heading down the path of raising concern over gun control and teen homicide rates again in real-life affairs. I find it amazing how mainstream culture adopts video games as tripwires for advocating gun and violence safety. I believe the graph below may be one piece of supporting evidence for this reasoning... or just an indication that we have replaced violence in real life with violence in a virtual setting.

EARLY PICO DAY:

My feeling is that early submissions are a little against the grain of the spirit of the day. It's supposed to be about honoring the character(s) on his day, not about beating the competition to the punch or ensuring you get a trophy.

Plus it's like a huge gift to Tom on his birthday, an overwhelming rush of high-quality stuff in the medium he knows and appreciates.

I don't believe that people were just mistaken about the day or had extenuating circumstances, I see it as a selfish move on those authors' parts.

But yeah, we have something similar (albeit slightly less nonsensical) over in the UK about alcohol :s It's all silly really.

Very true. It really does seem like a living city. There's so much that can be seen and heard, and so many ways to go about things.

My highlight so far (besides the cutscenes in general) has to be picking my girlfriend up in a stolen car that had the blood of the people I had just ran over splattered across the hood. She didn't care.

Hmm, I was kinda thinking about this too...I mean there is a better chance to get trophies and recognized more today. But that ruins the fun, doesn't it? Its not about trophies or recognition its for Tom Fulp, for creating this site and for creating pico

Mebbe its the people on the other side of the globe for whom it is already April 30th. But I'm betting some people just wanted to beat the others to the punch. I see little point in doing so.

Anyways, I didn't make anything for it. I feel bad. :(

Time lapse de-suckage
Does anyone ever do this? Come back and redraw a character or a picture or something that they drew a year or two ago. It's pretty encouraging, for those of you who don't think that your work is paying off or showing any change.

I was thinking of making something similar to Xbox achievements, but for Flash. Basically, a developer could put some code in his game and set achievements at whenever he wants. Users can also make accounts on the site, and when they play a game that uses this achievement system, they just enter their username and password to get the achievements into their account (when they ear them). Does this sound like a good idea?

I know some people are already far into a project like that. A friend of mine has been working on something like it the past month.

Anyone got the feeling that there slowly but surely going to run out of ideas? i mean i enjoy the earlier episodes like "Pip" when it's a nicely packed episode of character building.

I'm pretty sure NG could capitalise on it as well. With that API and all it wouldn't be too hard for games to access it, and for the API to check the game's score [yknow, quality measures and all that jazz], take the session ID of the user, add gamer score to your EXP... someone put it on Tom's "after I trim my beard" list...

GTA4
Worth every penny if you already like the game franchise. Otherwise, probably not going to appeal. But I've yet to know anyone who's not played GTA for more than ten minutes and not loved it.

So mostly, this stuff is illegal. The only two major things I noticed that were new is that things which "APPEAR" to ______ are illegal, which is odd. I would've thought it could be like fake violence and just be passed off as it is in video-games.
