There is, I used ultramon, mostly for images, recently I've switched to Wallpaper engine with this file across all 3 screens

While Mate is nice, XFCE is very mature and works really well. It's very versatile as well. I rather liked XFCE when I used it.

Something else unrelated, for some strange reason, the pre-installed applications are different on each fedora spin. For example fedora's MATE-Compiz spin contains HexChat as an IRC client, Thunderbird as an email client and LibreOffice whereas the Xfce spin has Pidgin as it's default IRC client, Claws Mail as it's email client and no office suite and just Gnumetric which is just Spreadsheet program.

You could keep windows for gaming and some specific software and use linux for everything else. Of course i'll recommend that you first test linux on a VM or on a Live CD before you decide to commit to it
i have mint as a dual-boot option, i'm not sure how i feel about it though

I got lucky and ended up really loving bspwm without having to hop around a whole bunch. I haven't tried anything else except for awesomewm which I wasn't a fan of.
