To clear things up for those who don't seem to understand, this isn't about saving Betamax the tape format, this is to prevent a ruling from being over turned. Basically the Supreme Court said it was okay for companies to make and sell VCR's for home use, and that includes Betamax, VHS, etc. If the Supreme Court ruled it was illegal we wouldn't have VCR's and things that could record video and sound!

If this ruling is over turned future recording devices may never see the light of day. Say HD DVD recorders, and other high resolution recording formats that are on their way.

The movie and music industry is so f'ing stupid to try and get the ruling over turned after it made them a fortune with VHS and DVD sales. They are STILL afraid that if higher quality recording formats are made available to the general public that people won't buy their movies and music. However, if they realse HD DVD's that offer higher quality than standard DVD's they can re-sell all the old movies they already sold on VHS, and then DVD.

Thats not the problem, though. I can see going after those that are making an actual cash profit from this buisness, BUT what we record we have already paid for. I think of it like this:

If you pay for cable or other channels that you gotta pay for (such as HBO) then it's like you and a buncha people got together and paid for a movie. Your money goes from the cable companies and to those that sell these movies to stations. In short, if you wanna copy something you have paid for, then no one should be able to tell you no.

Luckily for us though, we aren't too likely to have this ruling overturned. Last I checked, both the supreme court and Congress in general have Republicans as the majority. We may seem old and crusty, but we aren't likely to change a ruling set not even that long ago.

Until the US encourages Canada to ban the recording technology too. Then we will follow what they say, because I've seen instances like that before. When a country tells Canada what to do, we usually listen.
