The Dragon Age series got its start at a time when RPGs felt like they were nearly on their death bed, and had an incredible first entry that had rich mechanics, a literal dictionary full of history and lore, character history that changed your beginning section of the game and really defined your character, companions with varied likes and dislikes and multiple ways to change their personality over the course of the game, complex spell interactions, varied endings, multiple characters including yourself can live or die, etc.
Dragon Age 2 came out and it was a pile of hot garbage, and I mean that sincerely. A grand total of three maps, no more character creation, completely on rails, all complexity and rpg mechanics thrown out, press x to win.
Dragon Age Inquisition was clearly meant to be an MMO, retooled into a single player game. It's better than 2 but not nearly as good as the first.
The best thing to be said about the whole series is that your choices in 1 (and 2) carry over all the way into 3, if you import your save files, sometimes changing things quite a bit.
